Approximately half of lifetime mental health problems begin before the age of 14 years. One in ten children and young people aged between five and 15 had a clinically diagnosable mental disorder that is associated with considerable distress and substantial interference with personal functions. Schools are at the centre of universal mental health provision and have a significant role in promoting good mental health, in spotting early signs of difficulties and in intervening early. They have a key role to play in the government's strategy for children and young people's mental health.

The conference will report on the local Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TaMHS) Project which has been working in four secondary schools and will present local initiatives within the context of the national strategy for mental health.

The conference is free and is funded by the Bradford TaMHS Project.

Places are limited so book early.

There will also be a series of workshops outlining some local initiatives. When booking you need to indicate your preference for these. Please put 1, 2, or 3, etc against the workshop to indicate your preferences.

Skilled Helpers work in teams to support each other, and receive additional training in therapeutic theories and techniques. The workshop gives an overview of the skilled helping framework
Bradford’s Behaviour Change Model supporting emotional health and well-being in school: The Healthy Schools Programme provides a recognisable framework for all schools and wider communities to improve health and well-being, raise aspirations, support academic achievement and reduce inequalities. This workshop shows how promoting positive emotional health and well-being helps pupils understand and express their feelings and builds their confidence and emotional resilience and therefore their capacity to learn.
The school's role in providing the responsive mental health support young people want: Young people members of the Bradford's Healthy Minds Participation Groups will explore with you their idea of what responsive mental health support is and how schools can play a part in this. You will be taken on a visual, fun and interactive journey exploring how we provide effective quality mental health support from beginning to end. You will leave the workshop with top tips and plenty of food for thought.
Implications of social media on the emotional health and well-being of children and young people in the 21st Century: This workshop looks at the effect of new technologies on children and young people’s emotional health and well-being. It offers practical strategies that schools can employ to address the negative impact of such technologies on children’s mental health.
