RECAP FROM 2007 LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP [Alik Sakuta/Nika Ignatiev/Nastia Chuchulo]

A quick summary of the main topics discussed at the previous leadership workshop in Chicago. The importance of reading personalities (colors) and communicating appropriately. Conflict resolution. Interacting with young campers. Your role as a leader. The internet and social networking.

CAMP IS FOR KIDS: We can make a difference [Alik Sakuta/Nika Ignatiev]

A short motivational talk to remind ourselves why we are camp counsellors and the importance of our role. If you weren’t sure whether you want to be a counsellor, you will be.

CAMP COUNSELORS AS AN ORTHODOX ROLE MODEL [Deacon Alexander Morin]

Deacon Alexander Morin has been a keen supporter of Ruskoka Camp from the beginning, and will remind us of our responsibility as camp counsellors and staff to be Russian Orthodox role models to our campers, not only during prayers and services, but in our everyday behaviour at camp.

WHY KIDS NEED SUMMER CAMP: Guest Speaker [Bill Stevens, Camp Director of Camp Big Canoe]

Camp Big Canoe is a United Church camp, with a similar mission and goals to our camps. Bill Stevens will provide his overview of 25 years experience as camp director in running various camp programs at this church camp. Successes and challenges. Bring your questions and concerns.

LIFESAVING BASICS [Alik and Maxine]

Maxine, Alik and Dennis will review some lifesaving basics so that anyone can help if an unfortunate swimming incident happens. A basic review of first aid, CPR, basics of water rescues and searches. Everyone will get a chance to practice. This will be followed by a free swim.

COUNSELOR AS A TEACHER- A TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE ON TEENS [Victor Popov]

Victor will share his 25 years experience of teaching high school students, and provide valuable insight and ideas on connecting with, encouraging and motivating teens.

PERSONALITY WORKSHOP #1 REVIEW- What color are you really? [Alik Sakuta & Nika Ignatiev]

Have you ever wondered why some people think they can never be wrong, why people tend to be outgoing and scattered brained, why some people carry their emotions on their sleeve, or why others are so blunt and sometimes rude? This workshop is going to take a distinct look at yourself and decipher how "colorful" you really are in your communication style.

SEARCH/RESCUE TECHNIQUES AND WILDERNESS FIRST AID (Interactive) [Kelly Kaddatz]

Learn from an expert how to locate and rescue a camper that's lost in the woods. How to apply basic First-Aid using only items found in nature. How to teach kids from getting lost in the first place. What to do when you are lost. Pay close attention to the tips and ideas provided, you never know when you will next need them!

CANOE BASICS [Kelly Kaddatz]

An accomplished canoe instructor, Kelly will teach the basics of canoeing: getting into a canoe, how to properly lift and portage a canoe, basic strokes, how to keep the canoe from flipping, what to do when the canoe flips.

SWIMMING LIFE SAVING DRILLS [Maxine Grande]

A short practical exercise to practice lifesaving basics: accounting using buddy system and peg boarding, signalling and emergency, what to do, practice tows and searches. Bring your bathing suit. This will be followed by a free swim.

CAMP LESSONS AND TEACHING STYLES [Dr. Peter Jermihov]

Dr. Peter Jermihov will present a powerful talk on how we learn and how this relates to the different teaching styles. As counselors, we are parents, and guardians, but as importantly we are also teachers. Peter will draw examples from the 3rd “Razriad” to illustrate teaching approaches.

PERSONALITY WORKSHOP #2 REVIEW - Decoding the Color Code & Understanding Others [Alik Sakuta & Nika Ignatiev]

"It's not about you." Sound obnoxious? Maybe...but it's true. In order to be successful and to communicate with other people, you must be willing to walk a mile in their shoes...or at least be willing to try them on. You'll learn how to communicate with just about anyone you meet and begin to develop strategies that will shape your life forever.

MARKETING YOUR CAMP YEAR-ROUND [Alik Pawlukowsky]

Organizing social events with campers, church visits, utilizing word-of-mouth advertising, having a full-time photographer, using the web as a marketing tool.

GENERATION Y [Maxine Grande]

Maxine will explore the qualities of the Y generation and how these affect our camp programs and how we need to adapt to the new generation. Well educated, technology savvy and also technology dependant, what does camp have to offer this generation Y?

Roundtable Discussions:

TRAITS OF A CAMP LEADER - Nika I / Alik S

An interactive discussion to explore leadership issues specific to our camps. What are the makings of a good leader. When and why you lose authority. Friendship vs. control. Other counsellor authority issues. How to attract the right campers and counsellors. Screening very difficult campers. Developing the promising counsellors. Keeping control of problem campers. Keeping the right counsellors. Should counsellors be paid. Keeping counsellors accountable and responsible. What helps in retaining staff and increasing staff return rate.

I’M THE CAMP DIRECTOR: WHAT WOULD I CHANGE? – Yelena Khavkhalyuk//Masha Samartseva

What do you think is the most important role of camp? What do the kids think is important? Fun? What keep kids coming back year after year?

Participate in a lively discussion to explore how you would run camp if you were the Camp Director. How would you run the evening meetings or “Sbor”. Everyone will be asked provide their input. Each team will be asked to present their 5 best suggestions, and explain them.

THINK FAST! - QUICKLY SOLVING POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS SITUATIONS AT CAMP [Nika Pawlukowsky]

What is the worst thing that can happen when you are responsible for your campers? How to prevent accidents from happening. A sobering discussion to explore what to do in the event of a serious swimming accidents, or if the youngest camper hurts their ankle in the woods, or a camper is burned during a cookout or “Varka”, or there is a fight in the dining hall. Using non-verbal communication between counselors. (How to communicate with your counselor peers using pre-determined hand gestures, communicating with counselors without having to yell across the camp grounds

TRAITS OF A CAMP LEADER [Nika Ignatiev/Alik Sakuta]

An interactive group exercise designed to bring to the forefront the Top 10 leadership traits of a camp leader. Job Description of a Cabin Leader (What are the daily tasks of a Cabin Leader? Do Cabin Leaders know what's expected of them? Does the cabin know what to expect from the Cabin Leader? Creating a Cabin Leader job description utilizing your previous camp experience.

EVERYONE HAS A VOICE [Masha Samartseva], Feedback Forms

An opportunity for every participant to voice their opinion. Participants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire. What was the most valuable lesson you learned at this workshop. What didn’t work? What would you different next year? Teams will be asked to present their comments.

NIGHT GAMES – TIPS FOR KEEPING NIGHT GAMES SAFE, FAIR AND FUN [Nika Pawlukowsky]

A group discussion to agree on how to keep night games safe, fun and fair. Each team will be asked to present a set of rules for a complete night game. The best presentation will then be used for the night games to follow this discussion.
