Thematic Focus: A Growing Nation
Using the time line on p 216-217 of the textbook, answer the following questions on a sheet of binder paper, in reframed sentences:
1. What event in the period 1800-1810 greatly extended America’s territory? In what ways would the country have been different if this event hadn’t occurred?
2. What event in the period 1820-1830 involved slavery? In what way is this event an omen of future problems?
3. Indicate two dates that relate to the invention of the telegraph. What effect did the telegraph have on communication?
4. When was “The Star-Spangled Banner” composed? What is the relationship between the circumstances of its composition and its use as a national anthem?
5. The theme of this unit is “A Growing Nation”. Find one item in each group of American Events that continues this “story.”
*The second part of each question is “under the surface” so you will need to think (make inferences, draw conclusions, hypothesize, etc). Staple half-sheet to top of your paper and turn in when finished. Your thematic reflection is posted on SchoolLoop
