Job Title:Site and Livestock Assistant

Hours: 16 hours per week

Contract:Fixed Term 1 Year

Job Purpose: To assist with the day to day management of the farm site, including looking after the animals, carrying out general site maintenance and supporting volunteers. This post will be expected to grow our income generation in terms of farm produce, livestock and related activities.

Rate of Pay:£18,000 pro rata

Holiday entitlement:25 days plus statutory holidays (pro rata)

Probationary period:3 months

Responsible to:GeneralManager

The postholder will be subject to a DBS check

Main Responsibilities:

  • To assist with the care and welfare of the farm’s animals and ensure all records are kept and meet with legal requirements.
  • To assist with the development of the Farm, including the introduction/breeding of more animals.
  • To develop, promote and grow sales of farm produce and livestock.
  • To assist with all site work, including the maintenance of farm buildings, play areas, animal enclosures, woodlands, meadows and boundaries using volunteers where possible to assist with this.
  • To support a wide range of projects at the farm by working with service users and volunteers to carry out meaningful opportunities to engage with the farm’s work.
  • Torun school visits, team building day, parties and support other farm staff with the planning and running of community events.

Other responsibilities

  • To liaise with the public, members, and other individuals and organisations as appropriate.
  • To work within and to promote the aims and objectives of the City Farm, and to present a positive image of the Farm to the public.
  • To work within agreed policies and procedures, and to help create and develop high standards of practice on the farm.

Essential / Desirable
1. Experience /
  • Minimum 2 years of experience of working for a community organisation and understanding of the issues they face
  • 2 years of experience of working directly with volunteers in a community setting.
  • 2 years of experience in land based skills such as Horticulture Environmental Conservation, Stock Fencing and Landscaping.
  • 2 years of experience of animal husbandry.

  • Experience of selling/marketing produce and livestock.

2. Knowledge /
  • Knowledge of voluntary and
community sector groups
  • Knowledge of policy issues particularly relating to health and safety, safeguarding and equal opportunities.
  • Knowledge of the environmental and agricultural sector.

3. Skills /
  • Good practical skills.
  • Skilled in using a wide range of tools including power tools and machinery.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work following current legislation and keep appropriate records
  • Good PC skills
  • Ability to work well in a team

  • Qualified in the use of strimmer.
  • Completion of, or working towards, an accredited qualification in agriculture or related subject.
  • Clean Driving License
