DESERT ISLAND; LIFE OR DEATH!!

Target audience:High School

Objective:Students will have an opportunity to speak before their peers and practice their listening skills with an inviting game; we must survive the dangers of Desert Island!

Materials:Students: Pencil, game sheet, scissors (or ability to tear paper)

JTE/ALT: Bag/Box (to draw questions,)answers to the questions

Procedure:BEFORE CLASS: The teachers will make a copy of the game board for each student. The teacher will type out “survival”themed questions on a paper, with some white space around the question. Then, print out the questions and cut each question apart. After folding the paper as to hide the question, place all the papers in a bag/box.

IN CLASS: Make groups of 4-6 students, (preferably in even numbers). Pass out the game board sheet. Give a short explanation about being stranded on a deserted island, (very little food, water and shelter etc.) Explain the game:

You will start in the palm tree space. From here, you will move down the sheet by answering questions. How you answer the questions will tell you how to move. For example, if you get the question wrong, it may tell you to move backward two spaces. If you answer correctly, it may tell you to move forward and to-the-right one space. Some questions have multiple choices. You may have to ‘janken’your neighbor. Choose carefully! It will decide whether or not you can survive Desert Island! When you reach the bottom of the board, you will realize your fate. Someone from each group will take turns reading the questions out loud.

Have students use scissors to cut off the game piece silhouette. You may give them a few minutes to draw their original character design. This will be the piece they use to move around the board.

Have each group use “janken” to decide one person from each group who will be the first to draw from the question bag. Starting with group one, have the selected student draw from the bag and read the question aloud. Follow the question’s directions. Continue moving from group-to-group until everyone reaches the bottom, or as your time/questions allow.

Please refer to the next page for game board design. Feel free to use theexample questions below or you’re on your own.
