WELCOME TO WORSHIP
We’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning.
· If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else who looks like they know what is going on. For an explanation of why we follow the liturgy see the back page of this bulletin.
· Restrooms - We would ask that you use the restrooms out the back doors and down the hallway on the right.
· Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.
· We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem. The best place to sit to avoid reverberation is near the middle.

Today’s focus: We get to know jesus by baptism – his and ours
INVOCATION
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.
CONFESSION OF SINS
P: God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve nor punish us according to our guilt. Instead he looks upon us in compassion, forgives our sin, and heals our lives. Therefore, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and one another.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
P: As tender as a loving father is to his child, so gentle is God with you. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so vast is God's love for you. As far as east is from west, so far God removes your sin from you. He renews your life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Blessed be God who crowns us with mercy and love!
C: Blessed be God forever!

PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Father in heaven, at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Keep us who are baptized into Christ faithful in our calling as your children and make us heirs with him of everlasting life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 49:1-6
Centuries before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah spoke of how God had chosen his servant to “display his splendor” and bring his salvation to the “ends of the earth.” At his baptism in the Jordan God publicly displays his chosen servant, Jesus Christ.
1‘Listen to me, you islands;
hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.
2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow
and concealed me in his quiver.
3 He said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.”
4 But I said, “I have labored in vain;
I have spent my strength for nothing at all.
Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand,
and my reward is with my God.”
5 And now the Lord says—
he who formed me in the womb to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
and gather Israel to himself,
for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord
and my God has been my strength—
6 he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

THE GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11
Just as the Trinity was present at Jesus’ baptism, so the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were present at your baptism. Because of this and the righteousness won by Christ, God is pleased with you just as he was pleased with his Son.
4And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,

THE SERMON TEXT Romans 6:1-11
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory

Guests: Living Savior practices member communion. We believe that in Communion we not only receive Our Savior’s true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins, but we are also confessing a oneness in the faith.
For this reason, if you are not a member of Living Savior or the WELS, we want to share with you what we believe and teach before we ask you to join us for communion. Please speak to Pastor if you are interested in joining us for communion in the future. Thank you.

News and Notes
Bible Study – This morning our Bible study will be on the Epiphany of our Lord. This gives us a chance to learn what the focus is during the Epiphany season. Today we will look at Matthew 2:1-12 and the coming of the Wise Men.
Annual Planning Meeting will be held on January 21st. We will look at ways we can serve Jesus together in 2018 to reach out with the message of a Savior and serve those in our community. All are invited. Lunch will be provided.
Spiritual Growth Class – If you are interested in growing closer to your Savior and learning more about what we believe based on Scripture, you are invited to join us. We will begin another session on Wednesday, Jan 10th. Call (543-8222) or email () Pastor Cloute for more info.
Women of Faith/Church Council meeting will be next Sunday after worship. We will begin with a joint meeting and then separate for our respective business.
