3 large pink erasers

2 first grade writing tablets

1 box of 24 ct. crayons/colored pencils

6 glue sticks

1 pair of safety scissors

3 colored folders w/ prongs

1 box of Ziploc bags (Medium/Large)

small pencil box/organizer or bag

paper bags

**These additional items are also needed to ensure a healthy learning environment for your child:

-3 large boxes of Kleenex

-2 large bottles of hand sanitizer

-2 bottles of liquid soap

**Please note that if your child comes to school with a special pencil or eraser (Sponge Bob, High School Musical, etc) please remind them that it is their responsibility to keep up with their own materials. This can sometimes be challenging with them moving to other classrooms for SFA (Reading). As teachers, we will do our best to make sure that students leave school with the same materials they came in with, but our primary responsibility is the care and education of your children, so again please encourage them to keep up with their own supplies or use those special items at home for home work.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is a very important part of a child’s learning process as it reinforces what is learned in school each day. Please be certain that your child is completing all of his/her homework correctly. Homework is checked every day and recorded as a grade.

Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Students are responsible for completing their homework each night, which is listed on the Homework Sheet provided weekly. The Homework Folder will be sent home daily, and any make-up homework/work should be handed in with the folder. Please check the homework folder on a daily basis for updates and other information sent home from the school.

When assisting your children with homework please remember to let them do it themselves and that when you are helping you are not actually doing it for them; they will mostly need help with reading the directions. In addition to homework, each child is asked to read for at least 20 minutes each night and get their Read and Respond form signed. This will also be a part of your child’s SFA (Success For All Reading Program) grade.

***No Homework= No Recess***

BEHAVIOR POLICY

Proper behavior in school is absolutely essential for academic success. We as the teachers rely heavily on parents for support if and when any behavior challenges arise. Please let us know of any specific personality traits or strategies that work well with your child. Teachers will send you specific information on their class rules and behavior policy.

WHAT DO WE LEARN IN FIRST GRADE?

READING: Venetian Hills used the Success For All Reading Program. This program tests each student and assigns them to a class based on their reading level. A typical first grader is placed in a Roots class, which begins with book 1 and goes through book 48. After reaching book 48 students’ move to a Wings class which begins with level 2.1, (Grade 2 Semester 1).

Each day your child should bring home their SFA book and their Read and Respond form. Your child needs to read to an adult for at least 20 minutes each night and have the form signed and returned the next day. The only way your child will become a better reader is practice, practice, practice!!! By the end of first grade children, should be reading a grade level text at 60 words per minutes and know their Dolch/Fry High Frequency Words (see documents at the end of this packet).

LANGUAGE ARTS: *Writing Complete Sentence *Nouns * Declarative (Telling) Sentence (.) *Interrogative (Asking) Sentence (?) *Imperative (Command) Sentence (.)*Exclamatory (Excitement) Sentence (!) *Verbs *Adjectives *Contractions *Compounds Words* *Synonyms *Antonyms *Pronouns *Comma Usage *ABC Order *Research Skills (Dictionary, Encyclopedia, Internet) *Subject-Verb-Agreement

KEYS TO SUCCESS

  • Make sure your child gets enough rest…they can’t learn if they are sleeping in class!
  • Make sure your child eats breakfast at home or that they get to school by 7:30 so they can eat before class!
  • Make sure homework is completed every night! Please help with homework, but do NOT do their homework for them! Also, help them study their spelling words each week!
  • Make sure that your child reads for 20 minutes each night!
  • Make sure to reinforce behavior expectations. Talk with your children about the importance of following the rules at school, and check their folders each day to see what their behavior was for that day!
  • Communicate with your child and your child’s teacher if you have any concerns!
