1st Grade
Helping your child develop a love for reading is a precious gift that will stay with them for a lifetime. Below are a few tips for nurturing growing readers and a list of suggested books for summer reading. These are ideas and not requirements.
Tips: 1. Read at least once every day with your child (newspaper, books, letters, etc.)
2. Show your own interest in books (model reading).
3. Talk about the story when reading is done. Ask how and why type questions.
4. Visit the Mt. Pleasant library, or our LMC during June hours, with your child.

2nd Grade
The following is a list of books that have been selected to enhance your child’s summer reading program. Teachers and staff at our school have chosen these books because of their reputation as high quality children’s reading material. Please encourage your child to read at least eight books from this list or other appropriate books you find by these and other authors. The objective of this list is to encourage reading for enjoyment and to maintain a reading program for your child over the summer months.
Reading suggestions: Read with your child, model enjoyable family reading, make sure your child’s material is interesting to him/her, and have fun with reading. Students may choose books from the following series:

3rd Grade
We would like for you to read one book from each of the following genres: mystery, realistic fiction, nonfiction, and biography. Please use your summer reading log to keep track of what you are reading and turn it in to your homeroom teacher on the first day of school. Please go to the local library to check out books or go to MACKIN Via and read e-books or myOn books. Our LMC will be open for checkouts and family reading time on select days in June. 4th Grade
The Fourth Grade Teachers would like for the rising 4th graders to read one book in each genre during the summer vacation:
· Autobiography or Biography
· Mystery
· American Historical Fiction
After each book is read, students should write the title, the author and a one-paragraph (5-8 sentences) summary on a piece of notebook paper. Remember to check for punctuation, spelling and capitalization. Students should bring their paragraphs to school on the first day of 4th grade. Extra credit will be given. We would also like to encourage rising 4th graders to read Accelerated Reader books during the summer. You may log on to the AR Book Finder to search for books with AR quizzes. 5th Grade
The following books/authors have been selected for 5th grade summer reading. It is suggested that each student read at least three books on the list and write on an index card the title, author and summary of the book. Extra credit will be given for each summary (up to three) turned in at the beginning of the school year.
