Son Henry was listed in the 1910 Census living with this same family and listed as a "grandson".
William Edward McCree and Allis Smith had three children: (not in this sequence because of the more extensive information on our main subject, Henry)
Digression: Information about this family is mixed with facts and personal remembrances of William Edward's grandson James W, McCree, born 9-25-1937 in Crittenden County, KY. It is James' recollection that:
"I believe Hershel was only a half-brother to Henry. He was adopted by a Nazarene preacher from Memphis Tennessee by the name of Turner. Hershel was their only child and when his adopted father died, Hershel inherited about 80 sharecropper shacks and three nice homes from his father. Hershel's wife was named Adelaide. He met her while they were both attending Seminary. I stayed with them for awhile at one of his houses, which was at 725 Lemaster St. in Memphis, Tennessee. He died some time in 70's or 80's there in Memphis. Henry and Leona had a whole brother named Raymond (Emphasis added). He was an outlaw, a fugitive from justice. Him and his wife hid out in the woods near Marion, KY. He used the name McCray, instead of McCree. The other McCree's changed the spelling of their name, because of him." (Emphasis added.)
The changes in spelling could have been for this reason, but certainly were done by Census recorders. Thus, if the other known facts fit then it is reasonable to conclude the person being researched is the same as the Census Record notwithstanding the spelling.
The above personal remembrance cannot be disputed, however there is additional information about William and Allis. We know that Henry was born in 1902 and a stepdaughter-in-law (Dianna Phillips) met and chatted briefly with his sister Leona. The period between 1900 and 1910 is unclear. Allis was 14-15 years old and William Edward was 20-21. We know from the 1870 Census that his father was a farm worker and from the 1920 Census that William Edward was also. Supposition: Education, responsibility and earning capacity may have been limited - and might also be true for Allis,
Webster County is adjacent to Crittenden County.

McRay, Allie 24 Wd. Cook Hotel KY-KY-KY
McRay, Leona 5 IL-KY-KY
McRay, Ray 3 Ind-KY-KY (The state spelling on the original handwritten copy is not clear.)
Supposition: Allis and William may have had financial difficulties and Allis left to seek work. In doing so may have traveled far and in 1910 wound up in Webster County with Leona and Ray. Allis later returned to William.
