Dear Parents,

I hope that everyone had a delightful spring break! It’s hard to believe that we only have 38 days of school left and only about 3 weeks before our first SOL test! Our reading SOL test will be taken over 2 days: Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3rd. Our math SOL test will be the following week on Wednesday, May 11th and Thursday, May 12th.

Students are currently working on math SOL 3.6. The student will represent multiplication and division, using area, set, and number line models, and create and solve problems that involve multiplication of two whole numbers, one factor 99 or less and the second factor 5 or less (double digit multiplication). Students are also continuing to practice their multiplication facts 0-12 which is SOL 3.5. It is very important that students are able to recall these facts fluently. Students know to use the “criss cross method” and/ or repeated addition to check their work.

During our science block we are learning about science SOL 3.7(soil) and SOL 3.8 (plant life cycles).

Students are learning about social studies SOL 3.11. Students are learning about the basic principles that form the foundation of a republican form of government. We will be learning about several famous Americans including: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., and Cesar Chavez. We will also learn about Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

During English, we have been reviewing homophones. We are also writing imaginative narrative pieces using thinking maps.

During our whole group reading, we are focusing on main idea for a whole piece of text as well as main ideas of a particular paragraph within a text.

In small group reading groups, students are either reading The Big Wave or, The Bridge to Terabithia.

Dates to Remember:
