PNL 02/2011

April 06, 2011

Dear Confreres

My recent visits to our parishes and communities, and the meetings with members individually and in communities, have helped me to gain a new and different perspective. It has given me a better understanding of the life and situations where our members live and work. Let me take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the warm welcome you accorded me. I acknowledge and appreciate your kind hospitality, sense of openness, spirit of hope and generosity of heart.

While on the one hand, I see tremendous growth taking place in our province, thanks to the selfless and dedicated service of the members, on the other hand, there are things that need our attention. In the areas of inter personal relationships, understanding one another as members of the same family, achieving financial self sufficiency and taking ourselves a step closer to God through our prayer life and other spiritual exercises, there is more to be desired. This is the ground reality. Let us be open to the fact and accept it, and move ahead with courage and hope, so that we can bring about a change, a transformation. Let God be our guiding force.

These days you will receive your sanctioned budgets. The sanctioned budget should not be something that makes us happy or sad. It has nothing to do with us being happy or sad, but should move us to take responsibility into our hands and do what we must, in the interest of the community and society. Sometimes we are led to believe that for any progress, any developmental work or initiative to be carried out successfully, we need the extra finance; for we think that without money we can do nothing. Can we not look at it in a different way, that with our efforts and God’s blessings, we can do everything? That could be the start of a new beginning.

In a few days from now we will celebrate Easter. “Victory through the Cross” is what this feast is all about. We have our share of struggles and suffering, but that need not be the end of everything; there is more to look forward to – new life and new hope! Christ through his suffering and death brings us this new life. May he help us transform our hopeless situations into hope-filled ones.

Wish you all a very Happy Easter!

Fr. Pedro Camilo Simoes, SAC

Provincial

12. Our Immediate Concerns

i. Re-organizing ourselves and setting our priorities right.

There is a strongly-felt need to reorganize ourselves (personally and as a community), and set our priorities right. Losing sight of the goals of our priestly ministry or undertaking our ministry without a proper focus could be a terrible waste of energy and effort. We need to step back a little, evaluate our priorities and our commitment to God and our vocation. When it comes to personal initiatives we need to remain within the network; it is important not to lose the connection - with God, the Society and one another.

ii. Building up unity.

The realization that we, as Pallottines, are all part of the same family should not be lost. We may come from different backgrounds, cultures and language groups, but as Pallottines and members of the A.B.V.M. province, we share one identity, one culture, the same charism and speak one language – the language of love. All of us should strive to build up this unity.

iii. Recommitting ourselves.

As we work towards establishing this oneness, we need to recommit ourselves as brothers and priests, to Jesus Christ, who is our model. In this endeavour our commitment to personal prayer, our participation in retreats and recollections, will take on an added significance.

iv. Greater efficacy in our Apostolate.

Our commitment will lead us to bring about greater efficacy in our apostolate. We need not worry about expanding our apostolate too much; consolidation is perhaps the need of the hour.

There are specific areas where greater efficacy is needed; Vocation Promotion is one of those. Good selection of candidates, who will be our future members, is everyone’s responsibility. Let us do our best to contribute towards this end.

v. Self-Sufficiency

Finally, financial self-sufficiency, and becoming economically more self-reliant, is something we must continually work towards. Financial support from abroad is no longer what it used to be. Therefore we need to build up a strong financial base locally, and take advantage of funding that may be available for particular programs and/or developmental works. Building up a network of local benefactors, and looking beyond the ordinary means of support to our work and activities, are some of the ways to reach this goal of self – sufficiency. May the love of Christ, which urges us on, motivate us in all that we do.
