Project 1: Passive Voice
Part 1: Reading about newspaper guidelines
News headlines are written in a particular way.
Read these newspaper guidelines:
· Newspaper headlines are often incomplete sentences: Difficult Times Ahead
· Headlines often contain a noun phrase with no verb: Unexpected Visit
· Another common headline form is a string of three, four or more nouns together, without verbs or adjectives: Landscaping Company Disturbance Regulations. It's helpful to try to connect the ideas by reading backwards
· There are a number of verb changes made to headlines. The most common are:
o Use of simple tenses instead of continuous or perfect forms: Forgotten Brother Appears = A forgotten brother has appeared (after a long period of time).
o The infinitive form refers to the future: James Wood to Visit Portland = (Famous actor) James Wood is going to visit Portland soon.
o Auxiliary verbs are dropped in the passive form: Man Killed in Accident = A Man has been killed in an accident.
· Definite and indefinite articles are also dropped in newspaper headlines: President Declares Celebration = The president has declared a celebration.
