That the joint schoolsite council (SSC) will be composed of eight members as follows: the principal shared by both schools, one teacher from each school, one other school personnel from either school, one parent(or community member selected by parents) representing Platina Elementary School and three parents (or community members selected by parents)representingIgo-Ono Elementary School.
SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION DISCUSSION AND ACTION
Specific authority is provided in Education Code (EC) Section 52863 to allow the State Board of Education (SBE) to waive the SSC requirements of the School-Based Coordination Program (SBCP) Act that would hinder the success of school-based programs. These waivers must be renewed every two years.
The SBE granted a waiver to these two schools in 2005.
All waivers of this type have been approved by the SBE for schools too small to meet either the requirement that each school have their own SSC, or the minimum composition requirements (even after combining councils) of EC Section 52852, based upon analysis of the circumstances.
SUMMARY OF KEY ISSUES
The Igo-Ono-Platina Union Elementary School District (UESD) operates two small elementary schools, each with a grade span of kindergarten through grade eight. Igo-OnoElementary School has 87 students and four teachers. PlatinaElementary School has ten students and one teacher.
SUMMARY OF KEY ISSUES (Cont.)
The two schools have a common administration, integrated staff development, and have adopted the same core curriculum. The two schools share the office manager, resource teacher, librarian and technical person, and school psychologist. The schools draw from a common attendance area, and although in a rural area, they are not far apart. The Igo-Ono-Platina SSC has approved this renewal waiver request.
The CDE recommends approval with the condition that the Igo-Ono-Platina SSC have a total of eight members under the conditions listed above.
