The CPA Association

The Care Programme Approach Association (CPAA) has been established to support the implementation, operation, and development of the Care Programme Approach. The Association has been in operation on an informal basis since 1993, giving support to people involved in implementing the CPA, particularly CPA Coordinators and Managers. Membership grew considerably, which led to the need for more formal arrangements in 1996. The Association is endorsed by the Department of Health in their document ‘Modernising the CPA’ and membership is recommended in the CPA Audit pack.

The Purposes of the Association

The main objections and functions of the CPA Association are to:

  • Act as a learned society promoting and supporting professional practice by developing, collecting, analysing, and disseminating information on the CPA to its members
  • Promote and support the delivery of quality mental health and learning disability care
  • To lend support to all those involved in the operation of the CPA
  • Develop and share good professional standards and practice in mental health

and learning disability

  • Seek to influence national policy, strategy and activity, as well as regional and local processes and protocols
  • Develop and influence the provision of high quality relevant professional training to all

The Benefits of Membership

  • Access to a British network of key CPA professionals including regional access through your local region.
  • British meetings held every bi-monthly to share good practice and keep in touch with the British scene.
  • Quarterly professional CPA journal ‘The Approach’.
  • Regional updates on British policy and good practice.
  • The opportunity to attend an annual conference looking at cutting edge developments in CPA related topics.
  • Access to British resources at reduced rates (e.g. CPAA video, CPAA handbook).
  • The opportunity to influence government and other body’s policy. The CPAA is currently heavily involved in the review of the CPA, which was launched in November 2006
  • Entering the CPAA Annual Awards where best policies and good practice are acknowledged and published.
  • Members only access to restricted areas of the CPAA website which includes training material and membership directory.

Membership of the Association

Mental Health Service providers (both health and social services by organisation, locality or directorate), Mental Health Service Commissioners, Non-Statutory Agencies, Professional Bodies, and User Organisations are eligible to join the Association, although the Association reserves the right to refuse membership.

The Association is funded through annual subscriptions from member organisations, and the cost is reviewed annually.

Each member joining the Association can nominate up to three representatives, additional representatives can be nominated for an extra fee.
