Center for Montessori Teacher Education – Infant and Toddler Program

The Center For Montessori Teacher Education, Inc. offers the following accredited program, which upon successful completion, leads to an American Montessori Society (AMS) Infant and Toddler Credential.

This course presents the Montessori philosophy, theory, teaching and strategies in the light of modern child development and developmental psychology.

TIME SCHEDULE:

The Infant and Toddler program explores the physical and emotional evolution of the developing personality from the birth of a child to three years of age. Emphasis is placed upon the integration of the human and physical components of the prepared environment. Subject areas include: Montessori Philosophy and Pedagogy; Preparation and Design of Responsive Environments; Infant and Toddler Development (physical, cognitive and emotional); Bonding; Symbiosis / Separation; Adult and Child Communication; Physical Health and Care of the Infant; Pregnancy and Child Birth; Legislation and Administration of Infant and Toddler programs; the Infant and Toddler in all day group settings; family needs this decade and beyond.

In the initial summer phase the student is introduced to Montessori Philosophy and Pedagogy, Child Development, Observation Skills, Health and Safety Issues, Leading and meeting current Childcare regulations and Environmental Design. During the five weekend seminars that follow, the student is given additional Child Development, Philosophy and Pedagogy, Observation and Record Keeping and Environmental Design along with Sensory Integration, Music, Movement and Art classes.

Our curriculum presentations are sequenced to follow the growth and development of a teacher in a classroom. The 3-6 Overview course is given after the Montessori student has had the opportunity to absorb the strong focus on Montessori Philosophy and Infant and Toddler Child Development that is offered. In this time frame, the Overview also acts as a stepping-stone for a Toddler specialist to develop activities appropriate for the maturing child.

The result of our time schedule and the sequence of curriculum presentations is that the student is given an ample opportunity for assimilating all of the information given. The yearlong format allows an individual to implement and use their new knowledge in environment settings and to return frequently for encouragement and communication with faculty and fellow students. We have found this to be both a productive and cohesive experience.

Supervised practice sessions are included to enable the students to become comfortable in the use of materials.

LOCATION:

The program will be held at The New School, Inc. A Montessori Center for Children in Apex, North Carolina, which offers a peaceful atmosphere in a country setting. Students find this conducive to concentrated study and meditation.

PRACTICUM PHASE: (INTERNSHIP)

“The function of the Practicum Phase is to provide for the student a supervised teaching learning experience and a period of observation, internalization, and further study, to bring together the theory and practice of Montessori education.” (AMS Practicum Booklet). There are three options available and the criteria for selection of a particular model are:

1. The area of specialization (birth-18 months or 18 months-3 years)

2. Extent of previous Montessori teacher education and teaching experience; and

3. Special professional purpose

We will be pleased to help determine an appropriate model for you according to these criteria. Students have the possibility of selecting a practicum that will provide them with a concentrated experience with children from birth to 18 months or 18 months to 3 years; or with children in institutional settings and services. A complete list of options is available upon request. During the year an area representative of the Center will serve as a supportive Consulting Teacher and classroom observer of the student. Our seminars offer frequent contact with program staff and the opportunity for discussion and feedback with fellow interns and other Montessorians. The Center works closely with each student, the school, Supervising Teacher and consulting Teacher so as to provide a complete and through educational experience.
