Pumpkinfest Prayer Breakfast: Thursday, October 24 at 7 a.m., at the Sycamore United Methodist Church. Bill Nicklas was the speaker. 18 KK attended.

Aktion Club Fundraiser: They’re selling Pumpkinfest sweatshirts for $25. Profits to Eliminate. There are still some left over. Shadow may bring some by, or you can contact Mike at 815 899 2990 (ext 122), or .

Mike Mooney has raffle tickets for us to sell, for the Make A Difference DKC raffle to win a new vehicle from DeKalb Sycamore Chevrolet! Please contact Mike to get tickets to sell. For each ticket sold the club will receive an $8.00 donation. The drawing will be November 13.

The next INTERCLUB is at 9 pm Tuesday November 5, at Pizza Villa in DeKalb. Circle-K is hosting (hence the late hour), and should be receiving the gavel from Tri-County. It’s always fun to share pizza with the Circle-K gang, so come on out!

Eliminate Fundraiser: Sycamore Club is selling BBQ pork drive-up tickets for November 14, at United Methodist Church of Sycamore. $10. Chops from Slo Smoke BBQ in Sycamore.

Looking for ways to donate something this season? There are multiple opportunities: Winter coat drive (Nov and Dec), Toys for Tots (thru end of Nov), T-day baskets (money rather than food, $30 buys a full basket). Collection for baskets will be next week.

Program Committee meeting will be Next Wednesday immediately following the board meeting at the Lincoln Inn.

Eliminate donations so far: $41 million KI, $1 million by the II District. Do we want to be a model club?

PROGRAM

We were honored to have new NIU President, Dr. Doug Baker with us today. He’s got a much better C.V. than Mr. Barker does, even though they’re the same age. Dr. Baker just passed his 4-month anniversary at NIU. He’s already hired a new AD and VP for Student Services. And he’s been listening to various NIU stakeholders. He wants to shift emphasis from graduation to preparing students for career success and life success. Engage the students in learning with outside-the-classroom experiences, especially internships, where you get real-life experience. He speaks from his own experience – such as on a drilling rig, where he learned a lot of new words (among other things). Really emphasizing co-curricular activities. Three pillars to keep up this cornerstone: 1) Build a budget. NIU’s budget process is not where it should be. Nancy Suttenfield is the new interim CFO. 2) Ethically-inspired leadership. Have a core set of values and code of conduct that supports that. 3) Community. Build a community inside the university that can work for the common good, and do it with the broader community. Wants to see a more vibrant DeKalb to attract people, and keep faculty living in town.

Problems – retention rate not where it should be. 34% of students did not come back from last year. Half of those were in good academic standing. Have to have better freshman recruitment and increase returning learners. Wants more international students (currently 3%), to improve cultural understandings of our students. By addressing these issues, NIU can control its own destiny.
