Third Sunday In Ordinary Time

Is 8:23---9:3 1 Cor 1:10-13, 17 Mt 4:12-23 or 4:12-17

Let there be no factions; rather, be united in mind and judgment. I have been informed, my brothers, by certain member’s of Chloe’s household that you are quarrelling among yourselves. This is what I mean: One of you will say ‘I belong to Paul,’ another ‘I belong to Apollos,’ still another ‘Cephas has my allegiance,’ and the fourth ‘I belong to Christ.’ Has Christ been divided into parts?’

How appropriate Paul’s teaching as we commemorate the week of prayer for Christian unity. Paul lamented the division he observed among disciples of various schools, losing focus of the Person of Jesus. He is aware of his mission to preach the gospel, making sure the cross of Christ does not lose its meaning.

How many people we meet who tell us they are Christian. Catholics are Christians too. For over one thousand years, the body of Christ has known division, between east and west, Protestants and Catholics, and more recent movements proposing their way of life as the only way. So concerned with the movement, the Person of Christ sometimes is obscured.

When Jesus prayed His priestly prayer in the gospel of John, did He not pray that all might be one? Do we relegate that prayer to His time and place? Are not the words which came from His lips, and the desire of Paul that the cross not be void of its meaning just as important today? Religious tolerance is important and respect essential, but ‘the mission of Christ the Redeemer, entrusted to the church today is still far from completion,’ the words of Blessed John Paul II.’ May we pray with Jesus that all may be one.

CATHOLIC BIG SISTERS AND BIG BROTHERS

Almost half of NYC children live in a single parent household, while 64% of households headed by single mothers fall below the poverty line. Many of these families need a little extra support. They want a role model for their kids, someone who can give them guidance when they need it and point them in the right direction. YOU can be that model!

For over 100 years, Catholic Big Sisters & Big Brothers (CBSBB) has provided one-to-one mentoring services for the city’s neediest Catholic and non-Catholic children, ages 10-18. CBSBB’s mentoring program is unique in that it focuses on strengthening the child’s entire family, while training volunteers on how to be friends and guides to a young person in need.

CBSBB currently has a waitlist of both boys and girls, ages 10-18, who are eager for a mentor. Please consider becoming a mentor today! And if you are not confident that you can make the commitment of being a mentor, you can still be involved in our mentor recruitment efforts by spreading the word about CBSBB to your coworkers, alumni groups, and other social networks.

Contact 212-475-3291 x214 for more information about mentoring, or Ryan Sheppard at 212-475-3291 x203 or at for more information about our volunteer recruitment efforts. Take a stand and make a difference!
