APPLEDORE COMMUNITY PRIMARY AND NURSERY SCHOOL
RICHMOND ROAD
APPLEDORE
NORTH DEVON
EX 39 1 PF Headteacher: Mr Jeremy Cooper

Dear Parents/ carers,

This term we intend to take the opportunity to explore the River Torridge and our local environment. Consequently , this will involve the children being out and about on several occasions.

As part of our topic work, we will be walking into Appledore and sketching at ‘Look Out’ as well as going slightly further a field.

Our first intended trip, on Thursday 12th May, is to follow the Tarka Trail, noting specific aspects of the River Torridge as we walk to Bideford from Instow. Hopefully, we will be crossing the estuary by Ferry, but if this is not possible we will go to Instow by minibus.

Once in Bideford, we will have lunch in Victoria Park before having a session at The Burton Art Gallery, learning about the local OldBridge.

On this day, we would appreciate it if you could collect your child from the Burton at 3:10pm. If this is not possible we would appreciate it if you would give permission for another parent to bring your child back to school.

* If the weather is awful we may rearrange the day.

Essentials for the day:

A packed lunch, snacks and drinks in a plastic container (all in a rucksack – as they will be sketching as they walk );

Sunscreen to be applied before coming to school and sun screen to be brought so that it can be reapplied;

Pupils to come to school wearing trainers or suitable walking shoes, trousers , T Shirt and their School Sweatshirt/cardigan. Plus a coat.

The second planned field Trip is to Northam Burrows, onThursday 19th May (10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.)

This is has been planned for the pupils to study Habitats and Food Chains

We have been advised by the Park Ranger that the weather conditions on the Burrows can go to extremes very quickly so we need to be prepared for all weathers even if, in the morning, the weather seems set to be a warm day. Although we will be based in the Visitors Centre for lunch, the pupils will walk with the Ranger from Westward Ho! so their belongings will need to be in a ruck sack, with their wellingtons in a separate bag.

Essentials for the day:

A packed lunch, snacks and drinks in a plastic container;

Sunscreen to be applied before coming to school and sun screen to be brought so that it can be reapplied;

Pupils to come to school wearing trainers, an old pair of trousers, T Shirt and their School Sweatshirt/cardigan;

An extra jumper to put on in case it is cold or becomes cold during the day;

A waterproof coat and a pair of wellingtons;

A warm hat and gloves and a sun hat.

Also, on Friday 24th June, we have arranged for the children to have a field trip to Julian’s Farm, which is near Bradworthy . There, they will follow the source of a river and be able to measure water flow and carry out other river investigations. This is also an opportunity for the children to return to school and , after an art workshop, have a school sleep over. Details and costs for this trip will follow closer to the date . However, the expected cost will be around £ 14.

In order for the first two field trips to go ahead we need to ask for a voluntary contribution of £6

If you have any queries about the above trips , please feel free to speak to any of the year 4 staff.

Please complete all aspects of the permission slip below and the separate SOE3 form.

Many thanks,

Vicki Stephenson and Ruth Smale
