AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THECHERAW HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2017SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS 2A1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.
Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Cheraw High School wrestling team of Chesterfield County took top honors at the state competition on February 11, 2017, at Dreher High School in Richland County; and
Whereas, on that fateful Saturday afternoon, Coach Porter led the Braves to their second state championship in a 4024 victory over BambergEhrhardt High School; and
Whereas, Cheraw grabbed the momentum early in the match as Jesse James and Charles Wilson each recorded pins over their opponents. Tyrin Jordan added a decision over James Gainyard to put the Braves in front 150, but the Red Raiders wouldn’t go away quietly; and
Whereas, BambergEhrhardt bounced back with consecutive pins to tie the team score at 1515. Topranked heavyweight Nick Dozier wasted little time giving the Braves another advantage, picking up a pin in just thirtyseven seconds. From there, each team traded forfeits to keep Cheraw in front by six points with four bouts remaining. After some back and forth, Tyrese Williams clinched the title for Cheraw in the penultimate match, pinning his counterpart in the first period. Khalil Crowder settled the final score of 40-24 with a major decision in the 145pound class; and
Whereas, with a season record of 374, Cheraw was able to round out a stellar season with a decisive victory. In a sport that demands staminaand strategy, Coach Brad Porterused his fortytwo years of coaching experience to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the mat; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are gratefulfor the pride and recognition that the young men of the Cheraw High School wrestling team have brought to their school and community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Cheraw High Schoolwrestling team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2017 South Carolina Class 2A1A State Championship title.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Jason Bryant and Coach Brad Porter.
