Laboratory Technologist

(Level SLT 07 – SGEU)

Prairie Diagnostic Services Inc. (PDS) has an 18 month term position for a highly motivated, detail-oriented, organized and confident Technologist in the Necropsy Laboratory. PDS Inc.is a not-for-profit corporation with diagnostic laboratories located in Saskatoon at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. This is an SGEU in-scope position designated as SLT 07 and is assigned regulated hours of work (up to 37 1/3 hours / week).

Candidates must clearly indicate in their cover letter or resume how they have acquired the following knowledge, skills, abilities and personal attributes. The supplied information will be used to screen applications.

Duties include:

·  Admit diagnostic cases, prepare accurate case histories provide technical assistance to veterinary pathologists and veterinary medical students in the preparation of cadavers for necropsy examination and interact with clients.

·  Collect and prepare relevant tissues and body fluid samples for further diagnostic examination as per accepted Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

·  Demonstrate and apply safe work practices where exposure to unknown and potentially pathogenic (zoonotic) micro-organisms is expected.

·  Dispose of animal remains, prepare and dispose of tissue fixatives.

·  Maintain necropsy laboratory quality standards established for cleanliness, decontamination, safety and pathogen containment.

·  Perform heavy manual labour utilizing mechanical aids.

The successful candidate requires knowledge of laboratory policies and occupational health and safety standards as they apply to Necropsy Laboratory equipment and chemicals. You will be required to prepare cadavers for diagnostic necropsy examination and fixed samples according to established laboratory protocols to ensure timely, precise, and accurate results. You must be able to communicate technical information in a clear, accurate and understandable manner to clients and co-workers. This position is scheduled to work weekdays 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM or 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. There will be some overtime and weekend duties assigned. Please apply by October 11, 2013.
