SUMMARY

Young Marine First Sergeant David R. Fetters is thecompany leader and Color Guard Commander of the Miami Valley Young Marine Company in Huber Heights OH. He achieved this top rank after only three years of service and has consistently distinguished himself through exceptional diligence and commitment to the many unit and outside activities. Always the first to volunteer for community activities, he wears the Young Marine uniform proudly, setting an excellent example for the rest of the Company. He is a precision drill expert and an inspiring leader of his Young Marine and recruit subordinates. As a senior Non-Commissioned Officer, First Sergeant Fetters continually displays his dedication and patriotism. He has successfully completed many specialized skills training courses and recently completed the 5th Young Marine Division Senior Leadership School, an intensely demanding course of training, where he was selected as the Honor Graduate. Most importantly, First Sergeant Fetters naturally exhibits the very best qualities of a Non-Commissioned Officer. Although a person of special excellence, he seeks no credit for himself. Rather, he unceasingly takes care of those Young Marines assigned to him, making sure that they progress in their training and complete their various assignments. He coordinates efficiently with Young Marine staff officers, and generally exhibits the many qualities attributed to a first rate company First Sergeant. There is no doubt that First Sergeant Fetters exemplifies the Young Marine core values of Leadership, Discipline, and Teamwork.

Special Projects/Achievements: Young Marine First Sergeant (YM/1st Sgt)David Fettersconsistently has distinguished himself through exceptional diligence and commitment to the many activities of the Miami Valley Young Marines (MVYM). Always the first to volunteer for community activities, he wears the Young Marine uniform proudly, setting an excellent example for the rest of the Company. He is a precision drill expert and an inspiring leader of his Young Marine and recruit subordinates. He has led his unit as Color Guard Commander and Honor Guard Wreath Bearer in support of variousorganizations, such as:the Huber Heights Masonic Lodge; Brookville Show Our Love Organization; Vietnam Veterans of America; Rolling Thunder; Blue Star Mothers; and,the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Wall.

As a senior NCO, YM/1st SgtFetters has shown his dedication and patriotism in a number of ways. He has represented his unit well and often, paying special tribute to active and former military service members. He regularly leads the MVYM Color Guard welcoming home WW II Veterans. YM/1st Sgt Fetters helped to organize and support the 9-11 Remembrance Day held at St. Peter Parish, which was attended by members of the Miami Valley community and all of the armed forces. He serves as a recruit instructor, and has taught drug demand reduction classes to his Unit.

He served as a realistic victim in the Greene County EMA county-wide disaster training exercise and the Montgomery County EMA Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) final examination practical exercises.

YM/1st Sgt Fetterstookpart in several training exercises and encampments, contributing to earning unit meritorious commendations. He successfully participated inspecialized skills training,includingBasic and Advanced First Aid, Health and Physical Fitness, joint land navigation and field skills,and leadership training. Hesuccessfully completed the Young Marine 5th Division (13 state-wide) Junior and Senior Leadership Schools. He was selected as the Honor Graduate for the Senior Leadership School, an intensely demanding course of training.

Awards/Honors: YM/1st Sgt Fetters began his Young Marine career as a recruit in January 2009. He graduated as the Honor Graduate of his recruiting class (“Boot Camp”). He has earned multiple awards and decorations including: Musician; Academic Achievement; Color Guard; Community Service; and the Young Marine of the Year Award (2010).

School Attended: Graham High School, (St. Paris, OH)Class: Senior

Church/School/Community Activities: YM/1st Sgt Fettersis a member of the United Methodist Church in Urbana, Ohio. He is a senior at Graham High School, and in January, 2012, was awarded Student Of the Month for setting the example above the standards asked. He has a Grade Point Average of 3.8.

Also, at Graham High School, he serves as the High School BandField Commander (highest position), responsible for the entire band and accountable to the band directors. His duties are to run fundamentals, teach music and drill, and improve the attitude, talent, and the overall performance of the band. During his band duties, he was won many awards including Freshman of the Year, Best Squad,Best Marcher, and Best Player. During his freshman year, he was appointed first trumpet, a skill level not ordinarily achieved until one is a senior. He has participated in District Solo and Ensemble competitions winning two superior awards and one excellent award for musicianship.

YM/1st Sgt Fettersparticipatesin numerous volunteer community service activities. He is especially active in commanding Color Guard ceremonies for many veteran and veteran support organizations; and, especially at Honor Flight veteran returns at Dayton International Airport. During the Christmas season he assisted the United States Marine Corps Toys4Tots program in the collection and distribution of toys.

Special Honors/Awards: YM/1st Sgt Fetters is currently appointed as First Sergeant of the Miami Valley Young Marine company. He was selected and promoted to this rank,though only a Staff Sergeant with just three years of Young Marine service; a remarkable achievement.
