Extra Credit Announcements

On the syllabus, I clearly state that students are allowed two absences with no penalty.

Students who have been absent 3 or more times will have their final grades lowered 4% for each absence over 2. (A person with 3 absences will lose 4%, a person with 4 absences will lose 8%, etc.)

Students who need extra credit have several options:

Option One (For students with too many absences only): Instead of using Workshop attendance for points, I will erase one absence for each workshop you attended, but you must tell me that this is how you wish to use some of your workshops. If you do not tell me you want to do this, I’ll simply give you the extra points, and that will not help your grade as much.

Option Two: Extra Credit Presentation about Research Topic

  • On 12/16, the day of the final exam, you will have the opportunity to do presentations about your research paper.
  • Presentations are worth up to 20 pointsof extra credit for an excellent presentation, OR two absences. You must tell me which you wish to receive.
  • Presentations should be rehearsed and engage your audience. (You may bring as many notes as you want, but you may not simply read your research paper.)
  • Treat your presentation as a persuasive speech. Convince your audience that your thesis is correct.
  • Presentations must be a minimum of three minutes long.
  • Presentations must include some sort of visual aid. (Powerpoint or other “presentation” file, neatly written poster, etc). You will be able to plug a USB drive into the computer or open your email.
  • Your visual aid must be neat, and it must be used effectively as part of your speech.

Options Three: Answering the Opposition

  • Find an opinion piece in the media that you disagree with. (An opinion piece like an editorial or opinion column in a magazine/newspaper would be ideal.) Write a neat, one page response in MLA format that answers the points you disagree with in a logical, persuasive way.
  • Must be one page, typed, and include a works cited page on a separate sheet.
  • You must print the opinion piece you are responding to and staple it to the assignment.
  • This is worth 10 points or 1 absence.
  • This will be due on 12/16
