Chemistry I Compound Research Project
Introduction:
Compounds make up most of the world. Elements, in their pure form, are actually a much less common way for matter to be organized. Compounds are much more common. For this project, you will research the properties and function of a known compound.
Requirements:
A. Apply your understanding of chemistry concepts to analyze a compound of your choice and write a research paper (no more than 4 pages) or make a PowerPoint presentation. In your research paper/presentation, do the following:
1. Discuss the significance of the compound, including common applications, advantages and disadvantages, and how it compares to other compounds used for the same applications.
2. Discuss the history of the compound, including how it was invented or discovered.
3. Explain the chemistry and process of how the compound is synthesized or how it occurs in nature.
a.Identify the chemical formula and structural formula of the compound.
4. Describe the compound’s important physical properties (e.g., magnetic charge, strength).
a. Discuss the chemical and molecular properties that lead to these important physical properties.
5. Produce a physical model or, if it is too large, a visual model on posterboard/PowerPoint. Note: Consult with the teacher and get teacher approval before deciding to forgo making a model.
Note: In addition to the content listed above, your research paper/presentation will be evaluated on the articulation of your response, including the logical, cohesive, and engaging presentation of content and appropriate use of graphics.
B. Justify your responses by usingat leastthreeacademically credible sources. Wikipedia is not an academically credible source, but its references/footnotes may be.
1. For your sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
Some suggested beginning online resources. Also, do not neglect to consult printed sources. Your library has some very good resources. See Mr. Prevatte’s website for the link to the Chemistry Pathfinder document.
