A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

THANKING THE HONORABLE JOSEPH MCDOMICK, JR. FOR HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE AS A BEAUFORT COUNTY MAGISTRATE, AND WISHING HIM WELL UPON HIS RETIREMENT AND MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS VENTURES.

Whereas, the Honorable Joseph McDomick Jr. was born May 1, 1938, in Saint Francisville, Louisiana to the late Joseph McDomick Sr. and Olivia McDomick; and

Whereas, active in the Four-H club, he received a scholarship to attend Southern University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education; and

Whereas, upon his graduation, Judge McDomick joined the Peace Corps, spending two years working with the Brazilian government as an agricultural extension agent; and

Whereas, in 1964, upon his return to the United States, he became field supervisor for the Penn Center, heading a pilot program to organize the communities in Beaufort County to help the people improve their living conditions and to make them aware of available federal programs; and

Whereas, in his thirty-six years at the Penn Center, Judge McDomick helped create the first Head Start Program in Beaufort County, helped organize the first Equal Opportunity Commission, and established the Beaufort-Jasper Comprehensive Health program; and

Whereas, Judge McDomick was a local civil rights activist, forming the Welfare Rights Organization to promote the hiring of blacks at the Welfare department, and instituting a land retention education program to teach black land owners how to keep and use their land; and

Whereas, in 1980, Judge McDomick accepted the appointment to become Magistrate of St. Helena Island, hoping to create equality in the courtroom; and

Whereas, while the responsibilities of a Magistrate have increased over his twenty-six years of service, he has always found the position rewarding, especially when he could help people resolve their disputes outside of the courtroom; and

Whereas, in 1965, Judge McDomick married Nersene Brown and together they have four children, Joseph III, Philander, Monicha, and Mark. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, thank Judge Joseph McDomick for his years of service as a Beaufort County Magistrate, and wish him well upon his retirement and throughout his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge Joseph McDomick, Jr.
