Construction waste comprises about 30% of landfilled waste. Recycling and reuse not only keeps waste out of landfills, but it saves historical architecture and reduces community repair, remodeling and building costs.
The re-stores below accept deconstruction materials – lumber, windows, doors, drywall, appliances, fixtures, etc. and re-sell them at a discount. Most of the stores are Habitat for Humanity ReStores or HFH ReStores.
While every ReStore is a little different, most focus on home improvement goods. These donated goods are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price. For Habitat, this helps local affiliates fund the construction of homes within their communities. Materials typically sold by Habitat Restores are donated by local retailers, contractors and individuals in the community. Some ReStores are small businesses, unrelated to Habitat for Humanity.
ReStores are for shopping and donations. For donations, it is important that you contact your area ReStore to first determine that they will accept your material. Some stores accept paint, single pane glass windows, bathtubs and some do not. A few stores (particularly Architectural Salvage in Detroit) specialize. It will vary depending on space, specialty interest and area demand for materials. Many will provide pick-up service.
