The plot of a story is made up of a series of related events that include the conflict, the climax, and the resolution.

“The Interlopers” : CONFLICT
The conflict is the struggle between opposing forces. The protagonist is the person/thing undergoing the conflict; while the antagonist is the person/thing causing the conflict. An external conflict occurs between 2 or more characters/forces of nature. An internal conflict occurs inside a character who possesses opposing ideas or feelings.

Characterization is the character’s personality and the method by which the author reveals the personality. Direct characterization is where the writer tells you directly about the character. Indirect characterization is where the writer reveals the personality through his/her actions and dialogue.
“The Scarlet Ibis” : SYMBOL
A symbol is an object, person, idea, or action that represents something other than itself. Ex. Storm = conflict. Symbols can be universal, or personal to the story.
§ Doodle è Scarlet Ibis [both were weak and lost; both had to overcome obstacles and died anyway; when Doodle died, he had blood red all across his throat like when the Scarlet Ibis died]
“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” : ANALYZING
§ Plot: Walter Mitty imagines himself as a brave, courageous, handsome man when he, in real life, is a boring average man.
§ Characters: ROUND: Walter Mitty [a daydreamer]; FLAT: his wife [a naggy woman], FURNITURE: the other characters [who deride Walter’s inability]
§ Setting: In a car, and later hotel; in Walter Mitty’s imagination
§ Point of View: limited omniscient [can see into Walter’s mind]
