MAKE UPS: none FINES: Glenn received a fine for making a factual error in his talk about Italy, followed by a Happy Dollar from Marge for correctly fact-checking him. I think in the end these somehow washed.
Our president elect assessed a fine of $1.00 on everyone without a tie, reasoning a well dressed Rotarian makes a good impression.
That was quickly followed by a fine of $1.00 on everyone wearing a tie. After all, wasn’t that “fair to all concerned”?
BITS AND PIECES: Phil announced the Southbridge Master Plan Meeting would be held at the Eagles Club this evening and Jacob Edwards Library tomorrow evening. All are welcome to share their input.
Phil also reminded the Club our meeting next Wednesday will be at Cohasse Country Club where we will welcome coaches, players and cheerleaders from the Southbridge High School Football team.
Plans are being made for the Club to meet at the new Southbridge High/Middle School for lunch on December 5th. Stay tuned.
PRESIDENTS TALK: After running the raffle, assessing fines (which kept him quite busy) the meeting moved on to Ken’s “Badlands” presentation.
SPEAKER: Ken Rizner presented his trip to the “Badlands” on the theater-sized screen. We didn’t even have to turn out the lights! He gave us the highlights of the tour focusing on the landscaped and the wild life. The Devil’s Tower, which was a prominent symbol in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, was impressive but try as might, Ken didn’t find any visitors. He described how Devil’s Tower which is granite, was formed by the erosion of the earth around it. Another stop was Mt. Rushmore where commercialism has taken over and souvenir shops dominated the immediate area leading to the monument. Although an quite impression, a side trip to the Crazy Horse monument, still under construction, was even larger in scope. The whole of Mt. Rushmore is about the size of what will be the head of Crazy Horse. Privately funded, the Crazy Horse monument has been under construction since 1948 and only the face is complete. It will be 531’ tall and 641’ wide when completed. At Custer State Park Ken confirmed the range truly is where the buffalo roam and the antelope play.
Note: A special thank you to Ron Tremblay for handling the Bulletin duties this week again.
