Sad News

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of Alec Glass from Foxham Farm, Foxham.

Alec was a member in the 50’s, he took on the role of County Chairman in 1966 and has been involved ever since, by being County Treasurer, County President, Chief Rally Scorer (when it all used to be hand written onto a huge sheet of paper and added up at the end of the day), and to date County Trustee. Alec will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts are with Daphne and family at this sad time.

Congratulations

to Rachel Arrowsmith & Seb Haines on the arrival of Isabella Rose on Friday 15th April

RADIO 4 Audience required

I’m writing to you to see if any Young Farmers might be interested in joining Radio 4’s audience for a debate/discussion on “The Future of Food” on Friday 29th April 11.00-12.00 to be broadcast on Farming Today the following day.

Anyone in the audience (we have capacity for an audience of up to 200) can raise points or questions to the 3 finalists on the panel. The main thrust of the discussion will be the panellists, who will be explaining what their vision of the future is for food production, but of course the audience we be consulted will have an opportunity to voice their views and make comments and we would encourage and welcome that.

BBC RADIO 4’S FARMING TODAY DEBATE HOSTED BY CHARLOTTE SMITH (Presenter Farming Today and BBC 1’s countryfile)

How will the UK’s food be grown, distributed and sold in the future?

Radio 4’s Farming Today programme hosts a debate with the 3 finalists of the Future Food category in the prestigious BBC Food and Farming Awards. They are ambitious, ground-breaking projects that are already farming or delivering produce in innovative ways.

With the BBC’s Charlotte Smith they will discuss their business models and their vision for the future of food production in the UK and further afield. There will be representatives from:

·  McDonald’s Beef Carbon Project which helps UK beef farmers identify where environmental improvements can be made, with the aim of saving money and reducing carbon emissions.

·  GrowUp Urban Farms who practice vertical farming in hi-tech warehouses in London, producing fresh herbs and leafy salad crops without soil or sunlight.

·  Our Cow Molly – Sheffield’s last remaining dairy that sells its milk directly to Sheffield University, leading the way for others to adopt similar models. Previously, the university’s milk supply, sourced nearby in Yorkshire, travelled 500 miles to London and back to be processed. Now, it travels 5 miles and is delivered on the same day the cow is milked.

We hear how these ambitious projects are helping transform how we think about food production.

Hosted by Charlotte Smith on College Green at 11.00am on Friday 29th April. Broadcast on Radio 4 at 6.30am on Saturday 30th April.

This is a free event. Attendees are requested toarrive no later than 10:45am. to book free tickets (just register online) http://www.bristolfoodconnections.com/city-centre/bbcradio4-farming-today/

Under the new Rodenticide Stewardship requirements farmers, land managers and gamekeepers using anticoagulant rodenticides, will need a certificate to enable them to purchase professional products for outdoor use. This course will help candidates minimise and mitigate the risks of poisoning non-target species such as predatory birds and mammals.Greenway Training’s LANTRA Awards accredited course is being delivered by pest control experts and is approved by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU).The new regulations mean that from April 2016 all non-domestic products will carry labels requiring purchasers to hold an approved certificate of professional competence. Remaining stocks of products with pre-stewardship labels can be sold until 30 September 2016 and must be used by 31 March 2017.The true cost of the damage caused by rats is unknown. It is believed mice and rats are responsible for around 50% of farm fires in the UK, due to gnawing of electric cables.

Royal Bath & West “new” Team Challenge competition

Involves: Stock judging, preparation and showing skills.

Livestock at shows is important from an agricultural and rural standpoint, but also highly popular with visitors, and to see younger exhibitors taking part must be encouraged.

The animal element of the “team” can be a cross bred steer or pedigree heifer in the Beef Challenge, whilst in the dairy the usual pedigree breeds of Guernsey, Holstein and Jersey may be represented.

Animals used in the Challenge have to compete in classes later during the Show and with this in mind competitors in the Dairy Challenge may like to consider the Any Other Dairy Breed or Hybrid section.

Each element of the challenge, stock judging, animal preparation and finally showmanship will be judged separately and points and prizes awarded.

The points from each element will be added together to produce a team total.

The winning team will receive a trophy plus £150, whilst the teams placed second and third will receive £120 and £90 respectively.

Full details together with an entry form can be found in the attached schedule.

Kind Regards

Erin Clothier

ROTARY CLUB

Mr Mac Place from the Rotary Club attended the Executive meeting in March and gave a brief talk about the club. There were many similarities between the Rotary Club and YFC. In the UK there is over 50,000 Rotarians. They meet once a week, which include have 2 speakers during the month and a fundraising meeting. The clubs vary in size from 20 to 60 members. They have raised substantial amounts of money for Polio and have produced various products made for disasters, ie the Water Box and Shelter Box. They also got involved in the Somerset levels and the flooding in Cumbria.
