Upcoming 7th Grade APEX Summer Reading

Reading some great books this summer and discussing them the first week back at school is a great way to get back into the groove of school. Below are two columns – older classics and more modern books. You must choose one book from each of the two columns, but you are more than welcome to read more! Please pick a book you have not read previously, if possible. Remember, a movie is NOT the same as the book.

While you read, be sure you are taking some good notes. You need to takes notes on the following areas: (1) the main characters and how the author reveals them to you as you read (directly – telling you how they are & indirectly – by what they say, how they act, and how other characters react to them) (2) conflicts the characters encounter and how they resolve them (3) if the conflicts change the characters in any way (4) any flashback or foreshadowing (5) any symbolism – one thing stands for something else (6) any allusions – a reference to another story, book, event in history, etc (7) good examples of language choices the author uses and the (8) theme(s) of the books. (be sure to state the theme as a complete sentence)

Bring your notes with you the first day of school. We will break into literature circles and talk about the books you have read. Towards the end of the first week you will also take a reading check test over the novels and write an essay in class over the novels. You will be allowed to use your notes on all of these activities. So, be sure you have done a good job with your notes!

I hope you read many other wonderful books this summer in addition to two great ones here! Happy Reading If you are new to CMS, welcome! You have a great group of 7th grade APEX students you will enjoy! J Ms. Laura McLemore
