This video examines securement problems associated with three-wheel scooters. Included is footage showing crash test dummies incurring severe “injuries” resulting from the inability of current restraint systems to adequately secure scooters and the passengers who use them. (Running time: 8 min.)

D409 and the Scooter: An Exploratory Test

This video explores the effectiveness and safety of securement regulations mandated in legislative bill D409. Moderate driving tests subjected the secured scooter and 160 pound anthropomorphic dummy to determine if these standards kept the “passenger” safe and secure. (Running time: 9 min.)

Driving in Bad Weather

Highway Safety: The “Silent Factor”

Highway accidents are a major source of deaths, injuries and disabilities. Lately, federal authorities attribute the reduction in injuries and deaths to improved safety features found on vehicles, seat belts, speed limits and reduction in drinking while driving. However, the most important factor in reducing highway tragedies is the improved design of highways, cushioning devices, utility poles, signs and lights. (Running time: 30 min.)

This program created by the National Highway Safety Administration helps hospitals train staff and parents how to transport infants and young children safely. In addition to teaching hospital staff about seats and restraints, the K.A.R.S. program also instructs hospital staff about legal issues and liabilities. (Running time: 9 min.)

Matter of Time

This video exposes drivers to the number of accidents that occur each year and how they can prevent an accident statistic by driving defensively and safely. (Running time: 10 min.)

Michigan Emergency Evacuation Techniques for Special Needs Passengers

This video familiarizes drivers with emergency preparedness. Experts believe that taking preventative measures, such as making sure that the vehicle’s necessary safety equipment is in good working order, is a very important step. The driver should try always to remain cool and calm, enabling them to quickly decide if they should evacuate passengers. Drivers should familiarize themselves with their passengers and their physical capabilities and limitations. This familiarity enables them to devise practice evacuation exercises and strategies. The Older and Wiser Driver

This video is indispensable for any driver over the age of 50. It provides tips on how to drive more safely, such as changes to make in one’s driving routine and keeping the mind and body active. The video points out that there is no specific age to hang up the keys; each driver must make that decision when he or she begins driving dangerously due to increased reaction time, poor vision or other reasons. This video can be combined with other resources from the Wisconsin Transit Resource Center, such as the “Drivers 55+: Check Your Own Performance” evaluation guide or other resources. On the Road: The Lighter Side of Lifting

Mike Melnik, an occupational therapist, goes on the road in this video to show the best ways to lift in various situations. Melnik offers tips on lifting that avoid back problems, in addition to the many other physical problems that result from back pain. Included are tips on keeping the natural curves of the spine intact and lifting objects close to the body to minimize stress on the lower back. (Running Time: 21 min.)

Practice For Disaster

This September 1986 video documents a collision between a transit bus and a paratransit vehicle, staged by Valley Transit of Appleton, WI. Valley Transit collaborated with local fire and rescue teams and consulted with Robert Lower of the Transportation Safety Institute in Oklahoma City to develop this simulation. (Running time: 20 min.)

Q-Straint

Q-Straint demonstrates how and why transit agencies should use their restraint devices for securing passengers who use wheelchairs. This video includes a sign language interpreter for the hearing impaired. (Running time: 18 min.)

Roads of Winter

The host of this game show asks contestants questions on safe winter driving techniques. After each contestant answers, the host gives the correct answer and explains the correct driving technique by showing different visual situations. (Running time: 17 min.)

Safe Transport of the Public Under the ADA

This video helps drivers and transportation providers understand their roles, relevant to the ADA, in providing transportation services to persons with disabilities. The five-unit video explains and instructs drivers on how to work effectively with persons with disabilities. The first unit outlines the ADA and focuses on the idea of asking passengers if they need assistance. Unit 2 is on working with a passenger having mobility impairment. Unit 3 focuses on passengers with communication impairments. Unit 4 explains how to work with the persons who are blind or visually challenged. Unit 5 discusses epilepsy, elderly passenger, Alzheimer’s disease and cognitively challenged passengers. (Running time: 30 min.)

Safety Matters

This video helps organizations working with persons with developmental disabilities reduce risk while maintaining a safe environment. The video is divided it into seven segments: Backs and Lifting, Slips and Falls, Vehicle Safety, Fire Safety, Accident Reporting, Safety Inspections and Safety in the Community. STARTS Training Program

This driver-training program consists of three modules utilizing slide/tape presentations and demonstration of skills: (Running time: 42 min.)

-Vehicle Safety Inspections, discusses recommended procedures.

-Defensive and Safe Driving Procedures explores techniques.

-Driver Sensitivity and Passenger Relations help a driver deal effectively and respectfully with passengers who use special transit and rural transit systems. This video training course emphasizes how transit operators should stress the importance of good passenger relations and the need for it to become second nature with each and every driver.

UMTA Emergency Procedures for Rural Transit Drivers

Vehicular accidents and emergencies can occur at any time. When they do occur, drivers must know proper techniques to significantly reduce both personal and system liability by responding appropriately and cautiously. This program covers safety-related concerns such as securing the vehicle during an on-the-road emergency. It also explains steps drivers should take following a mechanical breakdown, including identifying the potential cause of an electrical or mechanical failure, while taking steps to reassure passengers as you wait for assistance. The video includes a section on the critical actions drivers must take immediately following an accident, and outlines appropriate methods for caring for an ill or injured passenger.
