Language Arts
This week we continued our space theme and learned about the sun – what it is, what it’s made of, where it is in our solar system, and about the heat and light energy it provides. As students read fiction and nonfiction selections they used the “right there” strategy to find answers to questions. They also worked on using context clues to find the meanings of unfamiliar words.
This week’s we worked on identifying and writing complete sentences with the naming part and telling part. We also played a game where we used a noun, verb, and adjective to create a complete sentence with correct punctuation. Students are also working on adding details and staying on topic.
Students brought home the 1st quarter report card today. Please sign and return the envelope, but keep the actual report card. Please sign up online for a parent conference.
Math:
This week we practiced writing and solving subtraction problems, and worked on deciding what strategies to use to solve word problems. For example, if the students see the word problem “There are 6 apples on the tree and 4 apples on the ground. What is the total number of apples” students should recognize they need to add 6 and 4. We also started measuring capacity, distinguishing between containers that are full, empty, half full, almost full, and almost empty. / Students had a great time on Halloween. Thanks to Mrs. O’Dell and Mrs. Kocerka for running the party.

Also, please have a discussion with your children about how important it is to show respect for all families’ traditions, celebrations and holidays. / Walkers:
