OPERATIONS ORDER 03/15

SURVIVAL TRAINING EXERCISE

  1. SITUATION

The Sqn is committed to enhancing the cohesiveness and esprit de corps of all the cadets. In concert with that goal is a desire to offer these cadets an opportunity to discuss openly and frankly, in a relaxed setting, their concerns and visions for the Sqn as a whole. Due to the size of the unit this is sometimes done by levels.

  1. MISSION

The Level 3 and 4 cadets will deploy to the field to conduct team building and leadership exercises in a wilderness setting over a two day period from 07-08 Nov 2015.

  1. EXECUTION
  1. General Outline

Senior cadets will deploy for a two day hike 07-08 Nov 2015. Participants will be required to bring their own personal items, see Annex A for a suggested list. Accommodations will be in Sqn owned tents and some meals will be provided, any additional meals and water will be the responsibility of the participants. There will be no formal instruction carried out but there will be opportunities to discuss and reflect on the Sqn, and brainstorm strategies for the coming year.

  1. Tasks and Timings

(1)  Participants are to meet at the start of the Dobson Trail in Riverview (see map at Annex B) at 0900hrs, 07 Nov 2015. In the event of poor weather the exercise will be postponed and members will be advised the night before by email NLT 2000hrs (8pm).

(2)  Participants can be picked up 08 Nov 2015 at the same point as they started from at 1600hrs (4pm) after a short exercise de-brief.

(3)  Participants are required to come prepared to discuss their outlook for the Sqn moving forward, this will include suggestions for improvement.

(4)  Participants will hike approximately 12 kms each day and set up camp. Officers will provide guidance for breaks and camp set up; however the main focus is for the cadets to determine this as a group in response to conditions encountered at the time.

  1. SERVICE SUPPORT
  1. Considering the length of time that will be spent on the trail, resources available on site, and experience level of cadets; participants will be staying in tents. The tents will be provided by the Sqn. The tents will accommodate three people including their gear. All cadets must have a place assigned in a tent prior to starting the hike. Parts of the tent will be divided amongst those staying in the tents for transport to/from the camp site.
  1. Military Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) meals will be provided for dinner and breakfast, cadets are responsible for their own lunches and water.
  1. Cadets are responsible for their own transportation to and from the start/end point.
  1. Participants will be no further than 3kms from a road in case of emergency that requires evacuation. A first aid kit will be carried by one of the officers and they are trained in emergency care. Participants are required to ensure they are fit and able to partake in the planned activities, any issues of concern (including any medications being taken) must be reported to the officer staff prior to the start of the exercise.

5.  COMMAND AND SIGNALS

Please note that coverage in the area is uncertain and any messages passed on should be of an urgent nature only.
  1. 2Lt Bezanson will be acting as the emergency notification in case we are overdue. If she has not made contact with any of the officers by 1900hrs on 08 Nov, she will contact the authorities.
  1. Participants will be emailed NLT 2000 hrs Friday, 06 Nov 2015 if the exercise is to be postponed.
