Essential Thought/Question: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released at theaters May 26, 2017. This is the fifth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I wondered how much does it cost to make a movie like this and how much money does a movie like this typically make or profit?

One way to determine this is to look at the numbers for the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The chart below gives some important statistics from the first four movies in the franchise.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Movie / Budget (Estimated) / Opening Weekend (U.S. Only) Revenue / Worldwide Box Office Gross Revenue / Profit

1.  You must view the latest Pirates of the Caribbean’s trailer. You may watch the others. Read all directions. Monday

2.  Study the data in the chart for a few minutes. What do you notice? Record at least two Mathematical observations of the numerical statistical data of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Monday

3.  This franchise has made a lot of money! Use 3pp for the following problem. How much money have the four movies made combined using the Worldwide gross revenue? Use the calculator to compute the solution; however, you must write what was entered into the calculator in show work. Record the solution in the table as well. Monday

4.  Find the profit that each movie made by finding the difference in each movie’s Worldwide Box Office Revenue and the movie’s budget. Use 3pp. Use the calculator to compute the solution; however, you must write what was entered into the calculator in show work. Tuesday

5.  Which movie made the most profit? Identify the movie and profit amount. Tuesday

6.  The average U.S. movie ticket cost in 2003 with about $6. In 2006 it was about $6.50 and 2007 was about $7.00. In 2011 the average ticket price reached about $8.00. Use this information in a table. Create an ratio table and give it a title. Tuesday

7.  How can you use the average ticket prices in these given years to estimate the number of movie viewers who saw each movie during its opening weekend? What is number of viewers for each movie’s opening weekend. To compute for each movie, write a ratio = Opening Weekend (U.S. Only) Revenue / Ticket cost = Estimated number of people. Use 3pp. Use the calculator to compute the solution; however, you must write what was entered into the calculator. Wednesday

8.  Prediction, how many people in the U.S. would you expect to see the new movie during its opening weekend? Wednesday

9.  Currently, the average U.S. movie ticket price is $8.65. How much should we expect the new movie to make during its opening weekend? Justify your answer mathematically. Use 3pp. Use the calculator to compute the solution; however, you must write what was entered into the calculator. Wednesday

10.  Create an advertisement for the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, May 26, 2017. 1. It can be drawings, computer generated, or a combination with the title. Include : 2. a colorful visual that pertain to the required movie trailer viewed, 3. the opening date, and 4. ticket cost, 5. your prediction of the number of viewers for the opening weekend, and 6. your prediction for the Opening Weekend (U.S. Only) Revenue.
