Guidelines for Adopted Country Project: Explanation of each topic is expected before showing the application of that topic to your country. Every topic must be addressed on these guidelines to obtain an average score.Minimum Requirements unit by unit…these are “guidelines.” Explanations, applications, and visuals need to go above minimum requirements to obtain an above average score. Unit 1 – Country profile

Maps – minimum of three – political, physical, regional (colored)

Flag(image or drawn)– colors and symbols explained

History Timeline – 10 dates with 5 annotations, label as political, social, & economic

Select 15 demographic statistics that you think are important/interesting – below them make 3 inferences about what these statistics tell you about your country

5 Themes of Geo organizer of your country or a place within your country

Paragraph of how globalization has specifically affected your country (examples: pros/cons)

Unit 2 – Population/Migration

Demographic transition – explanation of model and application to country, include data/statistics–at least 1 visual

Malthus Theory – explained and applied (cannot write “does not apply”), 1 visual

Ravenstein’s Laws- explained and applied to migration patterns within/without of your country

Population pyramids – three (2000, current, future)/brief explanation of each/analyze changes

AIDS profile from AIDS lab with statistics

Migration patterns – forced/voluntary, push/pull factors, refugee situations, immigration issues – at least 2 visuals

Unit 3 - Culture

Folk and pop culture influences (housing, internet/TV, role of women, gender discrimination, food, life style, clothing, etc.) –at least 3 visuals

Religion – explain origin of dominant religion and at least 3 specific practices – explanation and application of universalizing or ethnic, diagram or chart to illustrateAND at least 1 photo

Language – group/family (see language tree in textbook), major dialects, lingua franca, pidgin – minimum of 3 translations of English words

Education—literacy, gender issues, costs/budget, availability, other issues in education – at least 1 visual

Ethnicity – major groups(with description of ethnicity’s characteristics)explain any ethnic conflict, pie chart or other visual showing population demographics and at least 1 photo

Unit 4 - Political Organization of Space

State? Nation? Nation-state? Explanation of which one your country is & why – 1 visual

Type of government – brief explanation of government system, leaders, voting, citizenship, 1 photo

Colonial history? Colonized by whom and the effect of colonization on development

Shape – boundary types explained, 1 visual

Membership in Supranational Organizations- Have an example of a social, economic, & political org. with an explanation of the goals of that organization

Explanation of political conflicts/military influence/wars -- at least 1 visual

Unit 5 – Agriculture

Explanation of land use patterns – at least 1 visual

Subsistence or commercial farming? What are the cash crops and/or exported crops? –2 photos

Von Thunen Model – 1 visual, explained and applied to farming in your country (can’t say, “it doesn’t apply”)

Issues associated with agriculture

Unit 6 - Industry/Development

HDI – discussion of indicators, gender differences (GDI), must have data and statistics (chart/graph)

Self-sufficiency or international trade approach – which one is used? Explanation of model/application.

Rostow’s Model of development – explain model and what stage your country is in and why?

Core Periphery Model – explain model and where your country fits in,at least 1 visual

Site – explain land, labor, capital—presence of transnational corporations and foreign investment, include 1 photo

Situation – explain accessibility to markets, transportation, include 1 visual

Problems with industry and providing services, what holds the country back?

Central Place Theory applied to the major urban area in your country, 1 visual

Environmental Issues – explain issue, 1 photo

Unit 7 – Urban Patterns/Services

World city models – choose the model that best explains your country’s major city, show model, show at least 1 “bird’s eye” photo or map of city to prove model theory

Describe CBD (central business district) – 1 photo

Primate city? Rank-size rule? Any other major cities? Include population statistics for cities to prove

Services offered (be specific) – personal, public, business, government (major cities)

Problems/conflicts facing the urban areas of your country– 1 photo

Unit 8 - Current events (minimum of 3print news articles)

Short summary of article – you may use one pager template but be thorough

Hard copy of article including date, source, by-line

Important information of article must be highlighted

Relate article to a specific unit of study and how it relates to that unit. Be insightful!

Unit 9 – Application: Issue and Possible Solution

You must identify what you consider to be your country’s most pressing problem. What is holding your country back from raising its development rating? Use specific data to back up your choice. Thenpropose a course of actionthat the government could implement in order to solve the problem and put your country on the road to raising their HDI. – 1 photo
