~~~FAQ’s~~~
How do I keep track of my service hours?
Pick up a Service Hours Form in the main office. Take it with you when you complete service hours to be signed by an adult supervisor.
Where do I submit my service hours form?
Give the form to your sponsor.
When are service hours due?
First term service hours are due at the end of the first term. Second term hours are usually due the end of May. The deadline dates are stated on the form.
Can I do all my service hours for the year in one term?
No! Service is an ongoing obligation. You are certainly allowed to do more than the minimum per semester, but you may not carry hours over to the next semester.
Can I count service hours that I use for other service groups?
Students may NOT submit hours which have been “signed off” by another organization.
Can I complete all 5 service hours at one time?
No! Members may claim no more than four hours for any project.
What should I do if I have a schedule conflict with an NHS meeting?
Give your sponsor a written explanation
PRIOR to the meeting. Without prior approval, members are allowed only two absences per year.
What is the Faculty Council?
The Faculty Council is a group of teachers who oversee membership selection and disciplinary actions of members. NHS sponsors are NOT members of this council.
How do I know when meetings are held?
Meetings are typically held the first Wednesday of each month. They begin at 2:45 in the old cafeteria and are led by the officers. An announcement will always be made prior to meeting dates.
How can I find out about service opportunities?
Listen to information provided at meetings. Additional opportunities can be found on the NHS bulletin board (at the bottom of the stairs leading to the cafeteria). We also send some information by e-mail, Facebook and BLACKBOARD.
Can I suggest a service opportunity?
All members are encouraged to keep eyes and ears open for service. If you have a suggestion, complete a “Proposal for Fundraiser” form and give it to a sponsor for review.NHS supports local organizations and charities because they are easier to monitor and because the results of our efforts are nearer to home.
What is a ZERO HOUR?
A ZERO HOUR is service that you give without “credit” to an NHS sponsored activity. It is given for activities that support our Chapter of NHS and enhance its role at Fauquier High School. Many members earn ZERO HOURS by being the “go to” person for a service activity or act as a liaison between NHS and a communityorganization.
CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU ARE NOW A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - A VERY SPECIAL ORGANIZATION WHICH PRIDES ITSELF ON MODELING THESE
FOUR “PILLARS”
SCHOLARSHIPdenotes a commitment to learning. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended.
LEADERSHIPmeans sacrificing one’s personal interests for the interests of others. A real leader strives to train and aid others in reaching their common goals of success.
SERVICEis the willingness to work for the benefit of those in need, without monetary compensation or public recognition.
CHARACTERis demonstrated by such qualities as respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness, caring and citizenship. National Honor Society members are always students in good standing. They have unblemished disciplinary records and do not find themselves in situations that may result in disciplinary actions. This behavior is the product of constant thought and action, wise decision-making, right choices and self-control.
I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing,
To hold as fundamental and worthy
An untarnished character,
To endeavor intelligently and courageously
To be a leader,
And to give of myself freely in service to others.
In so doing, I shall prove myself worthy
Of a place in the National Honor Society.
MAINTAINING
MEMBER-IN-GOOD-STANDING STATUS
Through the selection process, you have already shown yourself to be academically strong. Your teacher recommendations have attested to your character and leadership, and your service record speaks about your sense of obligation to others. In order to maintain your active membership, you must:
maintain a 3.5 unweighted GPA
render 5 or more hours of documented community service per semester
render one (ZERO HOUR) of service to an NHS project per semester
maintain a spotless disciplinary record
attend all NHS meetings unless written request is presented to a sponsor PRIOR to the meeting
It is important to remember that National Honor Society members are role models in the school. They should never be involved in activities that might result in disciplinary action. Appropriate dress, appropriate conduct, standing up against bullying, avoidance of drugs and alcohol, honesty, trustworthiness and respect for self and others reflect one’s character.
WHAT IS “PROBATION”?
In the event that any of these obligations are not met,
you will receive a letter of probation from the Faculty Council explaining the reason and what will be required to restore your membership.
your membership becomes “inactive” and you cannot participate in meetings or activities with the organization.
you will be given a timeframe within which to respond to the letter and meet the requirements to restore your membership
your full membership may be restored - OR–if you disregard the requirements to restore your membership, you may be dismissed from NHS and asked to return your membership pin and card.
If such an event occurs, you have the right to plead your case at a hearing with the Faculty Council
The Faculty Council will meet to consider dismissal of any student who a) fails to maintain the 3.5 average, b) fails to meet attendance or service requirements, orc) is suspended or expelled from school for any reason.
Suspensions may result in immediate dismissal. If you are asked to return your membership card and pin, please do so immediately. These items are considered the property of Fauquier High School and are on loan to the student. Students who do not comply will not be allowed to walk at graduation. (Article V, Section 4, FHS CHAPTER CONSTITUTION).
