Creating pathways to participation in HE: the contribution of literacy policy

Speakers: Professor Mary Hamilton, LancasterUniversity and Professor Yvonne Hillier, University of Brighton

In this seminar, we will show how literacy (including language and numeracy) has been embedded within school and post-compulsory practice and enabled groups of people to access higher levels of learning. We draw upon the Changing Faces project which tracked the history of adult literacy, language and numeracy since 1970. We show how ALLN has become part of a wider social policy agenda of developing vocational and employability skills. Such skills development is partly being met by higher education. We will draw upon our policy analysis to identify how the changing discourses of ALLN and HE have been part of the international project of enabling adults to meet national economic goals. We will draw upon recent developments including Foundation Degrees and responses to the Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ) context to show how far a generic policy to raise the basic skills of children and adults can become entwined with other HE policy agendas. This presentation by Professors Mary Hamilton and Yvonne Hillier will provide an opportunity for all those interested in research in HE-FE to engage with thecontribution of literacy policy and participate in debate. The Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE) HE-FE Network is a national research network convened by Dr Jill Jameson (University of Greenwich). The network meets once or twice a year in London and other selected venues to debate recent research items of interest in higher and further education. Attendance at meetings includes research-interested colleagues from higher and further education from across the UK.
