AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE RENA “GERTY” KING OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETYFIRST BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Rena “Gerty” King of Orangeburg County will celebrate her ninetyfirst birthday on March 22, 2013; and

Whereas, a native of Eutawville in Orangeburg County, she wasborn on March 22, 1922, and was one of five children of the late Elizabeth and Robert Wright; and

Whereas, during her life, she has witnessed remarkable technological advancements, social changes, and international developments that have spanned the globe; and

Whereas, together with her beloved husband, the late Robert King, Sr., she reared five fine children: Jell, Robert, Jr., and Elizabeth, who continue to bring her joy; and Willie and Leon who have passed from this life but not from her heart; and

Whereas, her children have blessed her with countless adoring grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and even greatgreatgrandchildren, and she also hasbeen a loving foster mother and adoptive mother to numerous children; and

Whereas, when she lived in Newark, New Jersey, she worked as a seamstress and sang in the choir of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church alongside such wellknown voices as Whitney Houston and her mother, Cissy; and

Whereas, when she returned to South Carolina from New Jersey, she sang in the Springfield Missionary Baptist choir where she has been a lifelong member; and

Whereas, although Gerty is no longer able to sing in the choir, she is still an avid gardener and animal lover; and

Whereas, she has built her life by looking to the Lord who “made the heaven and the earth,” who has been her keeper and her shade upon her right hand, and who has promised her that He “shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore”; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her ninetyfirst birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Rena “Gerty” King of Orangeburg County on the occasion of her ninetyfirst birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Rena “Gerty” King.
