Alpin Hong’s “artist in residency.”

He had much to share with us about the power of music in our lives, about learning and about being alive to all that is around us. He can play just about anything on that piano, and his range is remarkable – anything from Bach to the theme of the video game, “Super Mario.”

It was wonderful to hear him inviting us all, when making mistakes, to “make big mistakes” because then our teachers will know how to help you. He was so full of energy – both instrumental and vocal students got stretched in ways that helped them grow. Alpin hopes to return at some point in the future and do a more extended residency where he can perform with us.

The year’s first “Day on the Purple” was a rousing success.

Over 50 students performed, many for the first time at the school. It was a festive atmosphere as the quad was lined with club tables and decorated with purple, black and white balloons. Tent structures were set up throughout the area, so folks could find ample shade in this unusually hot October.

Antonio Isern and student government organized and coordinated the afternoon very effectively, and Jim White and his recording arts students handled the set up and sound for the event without incident.

That same day, we walked at least 60 Engineering students over to the Manufacturing Expo in the BMU at CSU, Chico. Some of the students were presenting our Engineering program at a table at the entrance to the BMU. Inside, there were at least 25 companies who are manufacturing products in this area, many in need of skilled workers for well-paid jobs. The idea was to expose young people to the kind of opportunities they will have if they pursue a career in Engineering.

Sixty to seventy students attended the dress code forum at lunch on Friday.

There were also at least six staff members and one parent. Students expressed their concerns articulately and respectfully. They do not have central objections with the dress code itself but more with the way it’s being enforced. They see a disproportionate number of citations being given to girls. We will continue to work towards a solution that is respectful and caring of everyone.

Inspire will have its first Soroptimist’s Club (Venture Club).

Jana Gosselin will be advising the club which has a service learning component as a central part of its mission. The club will focus on “women helping women” but is welcoming to and excited about members of both genders. We are excited as this is one of the first clubs of its kind in a high school in our area.

And speaking of new clubs, Theron Hopkins and Scott Gunderson, along with several talented students, will be competing in the state’s Academic Decathlon this year. They are just now receiving the curriculum, and will be preparing for several months for the county wide competition. Winners will move on to the state competition and then to the national if they get that far.

MIT Invites Students to Research Competition

The INSPIRE student group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is pleased to invite your school to participate inMIT INSPIRE, a new national research competition in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, organized by MIT students exclusively for high school students.
The first of its kind on a national scale, INSPIRE will enable students to showcase and present original research in one of thirteen fields, ranging from anthropology to music, economics, and philosophy. Expert judges will award prizes for the most outstanding work in each category.
We invite your students to participate by submitting entries and competing for awards. The final round of the competition will be held at MIT’s campus in Cambridge, MA from April 7-9, 2015. We have recently updated our website with new information regarding deadlines, eligibility criteria, and the application itself. We have also provided a convenient student application handbook for reference. (Seegetinspired.mit.edu)
We hope you will share this information with your student community (via announcements, newsletters, websites, bulletins, clubs, etc.). The first deadline, for abstract submission, is on January 7, 2015, so there is still plenty of time for students to work on their research projects.

We look forward to your active participation and are happy to answer any questions.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Kirby Ledvina
Outreach Coordinator for MIT INSPIRE
