Minutes
Minutes approved as written.
Zoraha Kaye - Library
Instructors who would like a Garfield library orientation should contact Zohara. Noncredit ESL students are in the Main Campus library system but students do need to fill out a library card form before they can check out books. Zohara will also conduct workshops for instructors and students. Instructors were reminded not to take a whole class at one time to the Garfield library as there is no library staff.
Harriet Cohen -Staff Development Survey Forms
Harriet distributed a Staff Development survey for Garfield Campus. Instructors were requested to fill out the survey forms during the meeting and return them to Harriet before they left.
Course Overviews
The accreditation team may ask to randomly review instructors’ course overviews as part of the accreditation process. Pat will be inspecting all of the overviews to ensure the SLO and handicap requirements are included on the overviews.
Duplicating Services
Duplicating request forms are not being filled out completely or are missing information. Pat suggested highlighting the sections of the work being requested and not to forget to write Garfield Campus very clearly.
Substitutes
While Marie is on vacation, instructors may find their own subs until she returns. It is important that instructors who wish to sub fill out the substitute availability form as it is referred to first when the office needs to locate a substitute. Instructors who know of qualified applicants for substitute positions should have the applicants contact the office. Substitutes are always selected from current faculty before new hires are called.
Overloads
Instructors who indicate on the Spring or Fall request forms they would like to teach an extra class are contacted first if an overload position is open. Instructors may only teach an overload 2 out of 6 semesters, not including Winter & Summer sessions.
Holiday Party
Susanna Aramyan has offered to host the Noncredit ESL holiday party. The party will be held on December 5. Debbie Tannenbaum offered to host the spring party.
Exit test date
The exit test will be given on Thursday, December 11.
Exit Test Revision
The exit tests need to be revised to reflect the SLO requirements. Instructors would like to see a listening and speaking component added to the tests. A list of volunteers was compiled and they will receive an email from Pat with more information.
EL Civics
There are three objectives available to present to your class, Housing, Banking and Government. There is a $100.00 stipend available for each objective taught. Conversation classes do not qualify as they do not meet the total hours per week requirement. Interested instructors should contact Linda Young as she is in charge of the EL CIVICS program.
Committees
There are college committees that adjunct faculty can serve on. Some committees may offer ancillary pay. Instructors, who are interested, should contact Pat for more information.
Winter & Spring assignments
Pat is currently working on the assignments.
Budget
The budget forecast for this year is very gloomy. Noncredit ESL was very lucky to have had no class cuts for this semester. There is money for the new building and construction may begin as early as this summer. As we will lose the bungalows, replacement class room spaces will be needed during the construction. The First United Church of Glendale was suggested as a possible location to hold classes.
Staff development classes for ESL
There is money available through the Basic Skills Grant to provide Staff development classes for ESL. Ideas for possible topics should be given to Pat.
Catesol 2009 Conference
The conference will be held April 15-19 in Pasadena. Pat Zayas and Megan Ernst are volunteering for different conference committees. Information will be posted in the instructors lounge and instructors can also obtain information by logging onto the CATESOL website at catesol.org. There is money to help pay for registration costs. Contact Marie for the paperwork that you need to fill out.
ESL Lab
Evening classes are requested to schedule class visitations only on Thursday nights. Due to health issues of the lab technicians, the current lab policy will be maintained this semester.
Guild—Marcia Sibony
At the October Guild meeting, members will be voting for the Guild secretary position. Everyone is encouraged to vote. They are working on making the Garfield rep a permanent voting position. Marcia is also planning a Guild meeting at the Garfield Campus.
Registration changes
Students will no longer be able to register for more than one class in one time slot.
Senate—Paul Mayer
Paul Mayer is the chair person for the noncredit matriculation sub committee. Roger Bowerman is heading the accreditation committee. Dr. Levy has expressed an interest in attending the Senate meetings. There is a push to make class cuts for the winter and summer classes. There will be no Friday classes during the Winter session.
Getty Museum
Instructors were encouraged to attend the Getty Museum in-service as the Museum has a very good educational service to offer our students.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:05
