Use Vocabulary in complete sentences
Today we are going to be using the vocabulary words we learned yesterday in
Complete sentences. Let’s review the new vocabulary words.
. astronaut: a person who goes into space.
shuttle: vehicle that carries astronauts into space.
experiment: test to find out something
telescope: an instrument that makes things far away appear to be close.
gravity: the natural force that makes everything on Earth move toward it.
Have students make up a sentence using each of the words in a complete sentence.
Model with each word.

Use Word Cards from Ell Teaching Guide page 11. Give each child a set of flashcards. Have the children spread their cards face up s they can see them. Write these sentence frames on the board.
The word starts with the letter ______. The word means
______. The word ends with the letter ______.
Pick up a flashcard and give children clues about the words by reading and completing the sentence frames. Children hold up the correct flashcard when they believe they have the answer. The child who correctly guesses the word may choose another card and provide the group with the next riddle. Allow children to use the sentence frame or make up their own clues.
Reading Comprehension / Today we are going to be talking about the main idea of the story Exploring
Space with an Astronaut.
Is this article mostly about tools astronauts use or what life in space is like for
astronauts.? It is about what life in space is like for astronauts.
Tell me some things about how life in space is like for astronauts. Possible
answer…… Astronauts float everywhere. Sleeping bags are tied to walls.
Toilets have a type if seat belt. They exercise to stay strong. They take
sponge baths to keep clean.
Grammar and Writing / Subjects
Review the definition of a sentence.
The subject of a sentence tells who or what does something.
Have students write complete sentences and circle the subjects .
Model:
Mom opens a can. Mom is the subject and should be circled.
Ted gets the pan. Ted is the subject and should be circled.
The pan is on the top shelf. Pan is the subject and should be circled.
Readers / Introduce the book The First Trip to the Moon. Read the title and look at the picture on the cover.
What is the person in the picture wearing and why is he wearing it?
Preview the reader by talking about the pictures and naming the labeled items.
Review the high frequency words that appear in this book. Live, work and move.
Introduce these key words from the book. Moon(pg 1) spacecraft (pg. 2) and astronauts (pg. 2)
Read the book aloud to students as they follow along. Pause to verify comprehension and to explain unfamiliar concepts.
After pages 2-3 ask students:
How many astronauts were on the Apollo 11 spacecraft? Three
Where did they go? They went to the Moon.
After pages 4-5 ask students:
How did the astronauts get down to the Moon from the Apollo 11 space
ship? They flew down in the part of the spacecraft call the Eagle.
After pages 6-7 ask students:
What was the first thing the astronauts did when they landed on the Moon?
They sent a message to Earth.
After page 8 ask students:
Where did the astronauts land when they came back to Earth? They landed
In the ocean.
Reread - Have students reread the book together as a group.
