Teacher’s notes for using search engines and links:

Part 1 Exercise 1:

Note that an information pop-up appears on this page. Click on the x in the pop-up to close this.

Students click on the country names from the box which they will find at the bottom of the page. Each one brings up a short passage. Each passage begins with a greeting in the writer’s native language (together with the pronunciation of those greetings). To return to the home page, students click on the back key on their browser or on the ‘A kid’s life in…’ key on the left side of the page.

Part 1 Exercise 2:

The information the students need can be found in each passage, but they will need to look for it. Note that some of the spellings (e.g., favorite) are in American English. The information in the passages appears in the same order that they will need to complete it in their paragraphs. It should be pointed out to the students that they do not need to understand every word of each passage: they should get a general idea of what it is about and be able to pick out the key points they need to complete their paragraphs.

Part 2 Exercise 1:

Set a time limit of about five minutes for the students to read the passage. Again, they do not need to understand every word, but you should encourage them to ask about words they don’t understand that might impede their comprehension of the passage as a whole.

Part 2 Exercise 2:

Alternatively, you can make it competitive by seeing who can be the first to finish.

Part 3 Exercise 1:

Students listen to the song (and watch the accompanying animation) by clicking on the ‘Start’ key which they will find in the ‘Puzzle’ section of the web page. The lyrics appear under the animation, but can be hidden by clicking on the ‘Read’ key on the animation.

Your students might enjoy singing the song after they have done the exercises.
