Mathematics 9

Course Outline

Welcome to Mathematics 9! This course gives you a valuable knowledge base that is a prerequisite for any further study in high school mathematics. It is important to stay on top of all homework and assignments and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Material will be posted on my website as well as on Home Logic to help students throughout the year.

Text:Math Makes Sense 9, Pearson

Materials:

In addition to the assigned textbook, the following supplies should be brought to class everyday!!

  • Small Binder (1½-inch) – used for math portfolio only
  • Small Binder(1½-inch) and/or Notebook- used for notes
  • 10 Dividers
  • Lined Paper
  • Pencil with Eraser
  • Red Pen- used for marking only!
  • Ruler (30 centimeters in length)
  • Scientific Calculator

These materials will not be needed on a daily basis. I will give students advanced notice of days where they will need these materials. I will have a few on hand for students to use when needed, but students will have to share if they do not have their own.

  • Geometry Set
  • Graph Paper

Evaluation:

Many mathematics skills require the knowledge taught in previous concepts throughout the year. Therefore, it is necessary for students to complete their homework everyday and to ask for help in class as needed. Students may set up an appointment to get extra help in the mornings, lunch hours or after school if it is necessary.

Course Objectives:

To be able to communicate mathematically, orally and in writing, how an answer is obtained

To be able to connect mathematical ideas to other math concepts and everyday life

To use estimation and mental math where appropriate

To apply mathematical knowledge through problem solving- develop confidence through using a wide range of strategies

To improve basic skills without the use of a calculator and use appropriate technology as required

General Learning Outcomes:

Strand: Number

Students will develop number sense.

Strand: Patterns and Relations (Patterns)

Students will use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.

Strand: Patterns and Relations (Variables and Equations)

Students will represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.

Strand: Shape and Space (Measurement)

Students will use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.

Strand: Shape and Space (3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes)

Students will describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.

Strand: Shape and Space (Transformations)

Students will describe and analyze position and motion of objects and shapes.

Strand: Statistics and Probability (Data Analysis)

Students will collect, display and analyze data to solve problems.

Strand: Statistics and Probability (Chance and Uncertainty)

Students will use experimental or theoretical probability to represent and solve problems involving uncertainty.

Behavioral Expectations:

  1. BE RESPONSIBLE.
  2. You are required to be prepared and on time for class.
  3. Homework is to be completed for the beginning of the next class unless otherwise indicated.
  1. RESPECT OTHERS.
  • Treat others the way you would like to be treated. – NO “PUT DOWNS”!
  • Your behavior must not interfere with anyone else’s chance to learn or prevent me from teaching the class.
  • Respect all school property – texts, equipment, etc.
  1. BE POLITE.
  • Raise your hand to ask or answer a question.
  • LISTEN when someone else is talking.
  • During activities, you may talk freely, but it is not a social hour!
  • Do not leave the room without permission.

Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior:

Most cases will be dealt with as follows:

  1. In class discussion, time – out and/or short personal meeting after class
  2. Longer discussion or detention.
  3. Contact with parents or guardians.
  4. Referral to the office.

Academic Expectations:

This is an academic course. Success in this course is contingent on your previous academic record, and your attitude towards good work habits. A positive feeling for mathematics is beneficial. Students should plan to spend twenty minutes on homework each night in addition to preparation for exams, or studying.

I will teach you . . . but I can’t make you learn. You are ultimately responsible for you own education. Attending class, taking notes, doing your own homework and assignments independently and seeking extra help are your responsibility.

Absenteeism:

A note or phone call from a parent or guardian is required for all absences. Absences do NOT exempt you from any test, assignment or homework. If you miss a class, check the class website- look on your unit outline and/or contact your peers in the class to find out what you missed and the necessary material to prepare for a possible quiz or test the day that you return.

Contact the teacher in advance if you know you will be missing a class or if you have problems completing an assignment on time.

Assignments, Quizzes and Tests:

It is your responsibility to complete all homework for the assigned due date. Homework is part of your final grade and will be checked frequently. All assignments must be handed in at the beginning of class on the due date unless otherwise instructed.

Late assignments will not be accepted without a reasonable explanation. If you feel you will have trouble completing the assignment on time, please come and talk to me before the due date.

Student portfolios are due at the end of each unit. The portfolio will contain all of the assigned homework and completed quizzes. Any portfolio that is handed in and deemed unacceptable will not be graded

Binder is unacceptable (broken, zippered, crude writings . . . )

Binder must have dividers

Every unit must have a table of contents

Unit quizzes must be present in correct order of unit

Notes are to be kept in a binder separate from the portfolio

Corrections will be required to be completed for all tests and quizzes with a score lower than 80%. As completing corrections can enhance student learning time will be provided in class to do so. If a student requires more than the allotted time, they may make an appointment to come in and receive assistance.

Textbook Care:

You are responsible for the textbook assigned to you. Do not write, doodle, or put any marks in your text, even in pencil. Report any damage from previous users as soon as you discover it. Try to return your book in as good shape as possible. If you fail to return your text or you damaged it, you may be required to pay for the cost of replacing it.

Communication:

The successful delivery of your education is dependent upon an effective relationship among yourselves (the students), your teachers, and your parents/guardians. Therefore, in order to facilitate an open channel of communication among your partners in education please complete the following instructions:

  1. Read this document carefully; fill in the mark in which you wish to achieve in this course; sign and date it below.
  2. Allow your parents/guardians to read this document, and then sign and date it below.
  3. Return the last page of this document to me.
