”Developing Senior Tourism in Remote Regions – Experiences and the Way Forward”

Theme:

The three-year project is focusing on the potentials of developing senior tourism in remote regions. It started during the European Year for Active ageing and Solidarity between Generations in 2012. Promoting Active Ageing and enhancing regional economy through senior tourism have been the main threads of the project.

The project brings together partners from 11 EU regions and 9 Member States to exchange experiences and transfer good practices. After collecting good practices, organizing eleven study visits and three conferences and compiling feedback survey for seniors, partners have prepared regional implementation plans and joint policy recommendations. Project results will be presented and discussed at the Final Conference accompanied by the keynote speeches from the EU level institutions and organizations.

The event is targeted for the regional, national and EU level policy-makers, European networks and organizations on tourism, ageing and demographic change. The aim is to disseminate the project results and discuss on senior tourism development potentials and to provide a platform for networking on European level. Nearly hundred participants are expected to participate in the event which is hosted by the Head of the Latvian Delegation to the Committee of the Regions Mr. Andris Jaunsleinis and keynote speech will be held by Mr. Pedro Ortún, Director for Service Industries, Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission.

TOURAGE project partners

About: TOURAGE is a project financed by the European Regional Development Fund and made possible by INTERREG IVC programme. It brings together 11 partners from Bulgaria, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia and Spain. The Lead partner for the project is Regional Council of North Karelia (Finland).

The overall objective of the INTERREG IVC Programme is to improve the effectiveness of regional policies and instruments. A project builds on the exchange of experiences among partners who are ideally responsible for the development of their local and regional policies.

Recently TOURAGE project was selected among the 20 best European tourism projects that enhance sustainable tourism development. Altogether around 200 EU projects from different funding programmes were evaluated. The selection was made by the PESTO project (Promoting and networking of EU projects on sustainable tourism) which aim is to provide a platform for enhancing sustainable tourism and raise awareness about the topic.
