TERM PROJECT

History of Art and Design 1 (FFD 121), Fall 2012

GUIDELINES

1. PURPOSE OF TERM PROJECT:

One of the aims of History of Art and Design is to develop a historical and critical sensibility about artistic and cultural production. This means that, after successfully taking and understanding the course, you should be able to analyze and discuss a work of art or design in an academic and intelligent manner, regardless of time period/style or whether or not you have seen it before.

To test this ability, you are expected to prepare this term project about an object of art or design (NOT architecture) of your own choice that is physically accessible in a MUSEUM in the CITY of Izmir (NOT in Ephesus, Pergamon, etc.).

Make sure that the object of your choice is complete and close to its original state. Often old objects are damaged in such a way that it is difficult to talk about its original design. Example: If only the head of a sculpture remains, don’t choose it.

2. CONTENT OF THE TERM PROJECT:

You are discussing your chosen object, NOT its photograph. DO NOT talk about your object’s image but its actual three-dimensional reality, as seen by YOUR eyes.

Keep in mind the keywords for each of the topics of the semester, and use them when writing:

COMPOSITION
/ compositional lines
balance / harmony / symmetry / asymmetrical balance
rhythm / repetition
foreground / background
hierarchy / dominance
COLOR / primary / secondary colors
complementary / analogous colors
warm / cold colors
local color / diffused color
color harmony / color contrast
natural color / applied color
LIGHT / tone / value
shade / shadow
reflections / highlights
transparent / translucent / opaque

SPACE / 2-dimensions / 3-dimensions

layering / flattening
scale

Please be aware that writing statements like:

“There are vertical lines.” “There is repetition.” or “There is dominance.”

WILL NOT receive full points. In order to receive full points, there MUST BE more of an explanation of the topic, like:

“Because this is a sculpture of a standing person,

the main compositional line is vertical.”

“The pattern of squares on the handbag repeats

in the simple, regular rhythm of A-A-A-A-A.”

“Since the red circle is the largest shape and in the center

of the composition, we can say that it dominates it.”

3. DUE DATE OF THE TERM PROJECT:

The Term Project is due DURING YOUR CLASS in the week of 24-28 december 2012. The Term Project is NOTdue at any other time.

Late submissions will not be accepted! Please do not even ask!

Keep in mind that it takes time to print out a digital file, which means you should NOT start trying to print, for example, 15 minutes before class.

4. PICTURE FOR THE TERM PROJECT:

You MUST take the picture of your chosen artwork/design yourself, digitize it and insert it into the first page of your Term Project. Other pictures (from websites, books, etc) will not be accepted and will result in a loss of points. This is because you are supposed to see the object WITH YOUR OWN EYES in three dimensions.

Also, be sure to NOT change the proportions of your digital photo by stretching or squeezing it into the given box. Instead, change the size of the box.

5. CREDIT FOR THE TERM PROJECT:

Your term paper should be IN YOUR OWN WORDS according to what we have discussed during the semester. For more information, see the note about “plagiarism” in the syllabus, available at

It is NOTallowed to work with your friends on the same topic because it is difficult to determine whose work is whose.
