Unit Title: Discovering Wellness Through Movement

Unit General Overview: Fifteen – 55 minute classes to incorporating "Movement Wellness" into PE 1 for Freshman.

Lesson # and Title: Lesson #1 = The Air Squat
Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson, most students will be able to:
demonstrate proper technique in performing the air squat during class activities.
articulate a minimum of three technique prompts of how to properly perform the air squat.
demonstrate the ability to critique at least one peer’s air squat during class activities.
Lesson primary focus: Learning the proper technique of the air squat
State and National (NAPSE) Standards
MA 2.17 Demonstrate developmentally appropriate competence (basic skills) in the movement and motor skill.
MA 2.18 Demonstrate activities for warming up and cooling down before and after aerobic exercise:
MA 2.19 Apply biomechanics concepts about sequential motor learning and development and , exercise physiology.
MA 2.20 Demonstrate exercises in strength training.
NASPE Standard 1:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
NASPE Standard 2:
Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
NASPE Standard 6:
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
Lessons main terminology/definitions:
Air Squat, Heavy Heals, Flat back, Posture
The Crossfit 9 Essential Movements:
1-Air Squat => 4-Front Squat => 7-OverHead Squat
2-Shoulder Press => 5-Push Press => 8-Push Jerk
3-Deadlift => 6-Sumo Deadlift High Pull => 9-Medicine Ball Clean
Lesson Resources:

Lesson Activity:
0-5 min: Welcomes/Attendance etc…
introduction of classes focus
Over the next 15 Wellness Sessions, you will be introduced to the Crossfit 9 Essential Movements which include the: 1-Air Squat, 2-Shoulder Press, 3-Deadlift, 4-Front Squat, 5-Push Press, 6-Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 7-Over Head Squat, 8-Push Jerk and 9-Medicine Ball Clean
As a class – we will progress through the movements following this format:
Air Squat => Front Squat => Over Head Squat
Shoulder Press => Push Press => Push Jerk
Deadlift => Sumo Deadlift High Pull => Medicine Ball Clean
Overview of today’s primary movement focus – the Air Squat.
On the board will be a list of the identified primary muscle groups utilized in the air squat including:
Quadriceps, Gluteus Maximus and Minimum, Hamstrings, Core – Students will put their hands on these muscles groups as they are read aloud off the board.
5-10 min: group air squat technique overview / video demonstration / partner work and technique analysis:
Click on the link for Air Squats off the following site:
http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html
15-30 min: Dynamic group warm-up
25-35 min: air squat group discussion
35-45 min: Air Squat WOD review and activity
45-55 min: cool down/ stretch
Technology:
During the class period, students will utilize classroom technology to:
Videotape/ record their partners’ movement patterns and use the video to critique their skill development.
Through the use of video analysis and discussion, students will become more familiar with basic biomechanics (efficient and inefficient movement patterns)
Assessment:
Using the skill and technique, and peer evaluation rubric each student will be evaluated by the teacher (see attached handout for teachers rubric)
Using the skill and technique rubric each student will be evaluating at minimum one other peers form and technique in completing the air squat.
Continued Learning Enrichment Activities:
Outside of class, each student will attempt to teach at least one friend and or family member how to do a proper air squat. In doing so – take note of the individuals technique breakdowns and whether or not you are able to help correct any flaws in their movement pattern.
Reflection / Future Modifications:
After completing the Lesson, how might you modify it for the next time? Make those changes above as well.
