6.1 (a) When the letter “A” appears in column 1 of the Hazardous Materials Table,

DOT regulates the transportation of the indicated hazardous material only

when the shipper or carrier selects aircraft as the mode of transportation.

In Table 6.1, the letter “A” appears in column 1 for calcium oxide only.

(b) When the letter “W” appears in column 1 of the Hazardous Materials

Table, DOT regulates the transportation of the indicated hazardous

material only when the shipper or carrier selects watercraft as the mode of

transportation. In Table 6.1, no hazardous materials are listed

whose transportation is regulated solely by watercraft.

6.4 When offered for shipment by motor carrier, the basic description of lithium

aluminum hydride is the following:

25 lb Lithium aluminum hydride, 4.3, UN1410, PG I (dangerous when wet)

6.9 (a) By reference to the entry in column 9B, we determine that DOT prohibits a

carrier from transporting by cargo aircraft a consignment of acetonitrile

whose volume exceeds 60 L. Consequently, to comply with the DOT

regulations, the professor may not ship 240 L of acetonitrile as a single

consignment by cargo aircraft.

(b) To comply with the DOT regulations, the professor may ship 60 L of

acetonitrile by cargo aircraft. To ship 240 L, four separate consignments

are required.

(c) The basic description of the consignment of acetonitrile by cargo aircraft is

the following:

60 L Acetonitrile, 3, UN1648, PG II, Ltd Qty (Cargo Aircraft Only)

6.14 (a) When offered for transportation by cargo aircraft, the basic description of

ethyl mercaptan is the following:

25 L Ethyl mercaptan, 3, UN2363, PG I (Ltd Qty) (Cargo Aircraft Only)

(b) DOT requires the carrier to affix FLAMMABLE LIQUID and CARGO

AIRCRAFT ONLY labels to the packaging.

(c) DOT requires the carrier to mark on the packaging the name and address

of the shipper or receiver, “ethyl mercaptan, UN2363,” and a designation

of “arrows up.”

6.21 First-on-the-scene responders generally determine that a confined flammable

gas is present at the scene of a transportation mishap by observing any of the

following:

• The number 2.1 as a component of the basic description of a hazardous

material listed on a shipping paper

• The words “FLAMMABLE GAS” printed upon red labels affixed to

packaging

• The words “FLAMMABLE GAS” printed on red placards posted on the

relevant transport vehicle

6.22 First-on-the-scene responders generally determine that a confined flammable

or combustible liquid is present at the scene of a transportation mishap by

observing any of the following:

• The number 3 as a component of the basic description of a hazardous

material listed on a shipping paper

• The word “FLAMMABLE LIQUID” printed upon red labels affixed to

packaging

• Either of the words “FLAMMABLE” or “COMBUSTIBLE” printed on

red placards posted on the relevant transport vehicle
