Upcoming Programs

February's program is a template workshop/fabric swap. The fabric swap will be in three categories (batiks, 1930's reproductions, or Thimbleberries/country type fabrics). Members will be asked to sign up for their fabric preference at the January meeting.

There is be a change in the April Program: Froncie Quinn will not be our speaker. The Program Committee will announce the new program soon.

Getaway Weekend

Registration forms for a weekend quilting retreat at the Bayside Resort, West Yarmouth from Friday, March 13, 2009 through Sunday, March 15, 2009 are available from Sally Nimblett or Pat McIntire. We will have the option of lunch at Heartbeat Quilts in Hyannis on Saturday, and there will be lots of time for shopping and sewing.

Betty Gannon is seeking a roommate and a ride to and from the Getaway.

January's Program Is Our Annual Brown Bag Auction

Members may each bring ONE paper grocery bag (hence the name “Brown Bag”) containing quilting items that you want to donate for a good cause. In your bag of donated items, you can include good quality fabric- yardage or scraps (but please put the scraps in a zip lock bag), quilting books, notions, unfinished items like quilt tops, thread, etc. but please, no magazines. Remember, this is a fundraiser for charity; we divide the proceeds among the new England Quilt Museum and three or four other charities, depending on how much money the auction brings in so please focus on good quality items. (We have suggestions for other leftovers; see the notes below.)

Other guidelines: 1) Please include no more than 6 items in a bag; like items may be grouped together and counted as one item. For example, you can put notions or fabric scraps in a zip lock bag and count that as one item. You can bundle several books together and count it as one item. 2) Please attach a list of your 6 (or fewer) items on the outside of your bag near the top so the auctioneer and her helpers do not have to remove items from the bags as the auction proceeds.

The lists are also useful to members; everyone will have a chance to view the bags before the auction begins; each bag will have a number on it, so you can make a note of the bags you are interested in. Then the bags will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. So be sure to come early and preview bags so the bidding can move along! And bring cash!

You may BRING only one bag, but you may bid on and win

as many bags as your personal budget allows!

And if you come up with too many items--especially fabric--that exceed a shopping bag or are otherwise not suitable for the Auction, here are two wonderful programs that can put these materials to good use:

The Boston Project involves volunteers in making homemade sleeping bags (Ugly Quilts) for those homeless. We use recycled fabrics and distribute the sleeping bags FREE to people who are cold on the streets of Boston. All donations can be dropped off at The Boston Project's home at 15 Elmhurst...

PEACEQUILTS is a project enabling Haitian women to earn a living through meaningful, creative work - improving their lives and those of their families. Women from the community produce one-of-a-kind original art quilts informed by Haitian imagery. They earn a daily wage plus a portion of the sale price when their quilts sell.

PEACEQUILTS, an all-volunteer organization, is an outgrowth of the Martha's Vineyard Fish Farm for Haiti Project. A number of Massachusetts quilters--including the Quilt Museum--have been supporting Peacequilts by collecting and delivering supplies, which are virtually impossible to find in Haiti.

Items needed include:

100% cotton scraps or yardage with a special emphasis on small geometrics, solids, Bali prints, plain muslin, bold colors (avoid calicoes).
cotton batting (Quilters Dream or similar is preferred.)
embroidery floss (DMC preferred;it's like gold in Haiti!)
scissors, needles, thread, rotary cutters, replacement blades, etc.

For more information check outthePeacequilts gallery at: www.haitipeacequilts.org or call Jeanne Staples, 104 Third Street, Edgartown, MA 02539, 508-274-1104.

IRENE WILL COLLECT DONATIONS FOR THESE PROGRAMS AT THE JANUARY AND FEBRUARY MEETINGS.

DONATIONS FOR PEACEQUILTS SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO THE JANUARY MEETING IF POSSIBLE, SINCE VOLUNTEERS FROM MASSACHUSETTS ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO HAITI IN EARLY FEBRUARY.

LED Portable Light/Magnifier Devices

Irene has mentioned these portable work lights, samples of which were sent her in the fall. The samples will be available for inspection at the January meeting along with information sheets about the discounts available for buying multiple lights.
