Request to Alter or Improve a Council House
Guidance Note for Tenants
If you are planning an improvement or alteration to your Council tenancy you MUST obtain the Councils permission prior to starting any work and complete an Alteration & Improvement Application. The Council has 1 month upon receipt of an application to provide you with the decision.
Your attention is drawn to paragraphs 5.21 to 5.23 of your Scottish Secure Tenancy agreement.
Dependant on the nature of the works you propose you are responsible for checking if you require Planning, Building and/or Roads consent:– please refer to the online links below
In Planning Law, any flatted or four in block properties permission should always be sought.
Please be aware of Fees payable.
Your planned improvement or alteration may require you to obtain an asbestos survey and where asbestos material is identified you must appoint a suitably qualified contractor to remove and dispose safely the asbestos material from the area you propose to complete any works. Council Tenants must NOT attempt to dispose ofasbestos material. Please refer to the HSE website for further guidance.

If you have commenced the work and you do not have permission please inform your Community Housing Officer as soon as possible to discuss further.
