COMMUNITY EDUCATION LIAISON

Position Profile:The Community Education Liaison will lead in various ways to increase the number of assets in the children and youth of the school. This is for the purpose of enhancing levels of student academic achievement, strengthening relationships between the school and families, while increasing community involvement in supporting children and youth to encourage growth in ways that will support student well-being.

Directly Reports To: School Principal

Indirectly Reports To: Superintendentof Education

Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a field related to working with children, youth, families, communities and First Nations.
  • Candidates with a minimum of two (2) years of post-secondary training in a field related to working with children, youth, families and communities (or with an equivalent combination of education and experience) may also be considered.
  • Experience in working with children, youth and\or families is necessary.
  • Experience in the development, implementation and coordination of programming would be an asset.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all administration, staff, students, outside agencies, and the community exercising excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision demonstrating sound judgement and decision making skills to ensure quality of work meets expected standards.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands and effectively manage time.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Ability to develop, prepare and write applications for submission for funding grants.
  • Ability to develop and implement program plans and organize activities as required.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation and provide reports to the school administration or superintendent of schools.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of current computer systems and software associated with the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Ability to work in a team oriented, collaborative environment
  • Present a professional attitude and appearance

Supervision of Staff:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Without restricting the generality of this job descriptionand the specific needs of each school, the Community Education Liaison shall perform such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned including but not restricted to the following:

  • Review policy and procedures within the school and community that impact children.
  • Initiate the development and implementation of Local Advisory Councils (specific to First Nations Communities). Connect the Local Advisory Councils(LAC) to the School Community Council (SCC).
  • Develop processes and opportunities to support student and family engagement in the school community.
  • Encourage participation of parents, students and community in the School Community Council
  • Develop and implement processes to encourage and support the attendance of children and youth.
  • Responsible for the implementation of programs involving students, staff, parents, and community members in order to enrich the school.
  • Collect and maintain data in order to monitor and measure the level of success of implemented support programs.
  • Assist school administration to develop a positive, caring and supportive school.
  • Facilitate effective communication between the school and the students, parents, and community.
  • Identify and establish partnerships with other service providers and community agencies to provide services and programs for students and families.
  • Comply with all applicable Board guidelines, policies and practices, guidelines and legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Access funding opportunities to implement programs and purchase equipment.
  • Engage the children and youth in leadership roles within the school to support student development.
  • Provide leadership for the school nutrition program.
  • Create/implement a plan to increase parent involvement in their child’s growth and development.
  • Seek out and promote meaningful roles and opportunities within the community for children and youth to be valued and develop and implement an ongoing after-school program.
  • Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution providing services to children
  • Be willing to engage in lifelong learning with respect to professional development, training, in-service and courses of study
  • Be knowledgeable about and supportive of Administrative Procedures and directives
  • Perform other duties as may be required or assigned by the Principal

Judgment, Independence and Client Contact:

Confidentiality

At no time should the Community Education Liaison discuss in public, information pertaining to anyone in the School Division. The Community Education Liaison is expected to respect the confidential nature of the position by avoiding discussion about any topics that are not formally communicated to the public by the administration of the school or the school division. Breaching confidentiality is a serious violation of acceptable conduct.

Independence

The Community Education Liaison is expected to work independently and as a team member of the assigned department, the schools and the division office as required.

Client/Peer Contact

This employee works collegially with school staff, school-based administration and other division based staff. Contact with other employees and outside agencies is regular and frequent.

Responsibility for Quality of Assigned Work

This employee is under supervision and is responsible for the quality of the work and is expected to seek clarification and direction on any matters of concern.
