Article: The Last Lecture-----I Never Made It To The NFL

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

Pausch was memorizing the footing of his success----football was his dream. It used to be his dream to reach the National Football League, but he failed eventually. However, what made a difference wasn’t the ending, but the process. Pausch met the coach who ended up changing his life----Coach Graham. Graham taught them a lesson on the very first day: He was going to train them without football. Fundamentalswere the greatest gift from CoachGraham.

CoachGraham was a fastidious coach, but never endangered kids. What he had done was giving the kids the ability of pushing themselves to improve and work harder. He was the one who accelerated the potential strength of the kids to work on. In one game, Pausch and his team failed to defeat their rival. At halftime, in their rush for water, Graham showed up. He lifted the bucket and damped all the water on the ground, showing the boys how they had disgraced themselves. The boys were humiliated, not because they were irritated, but because they disappointed their coach. Therefore, with thirst and fatigue, the boys went back to the field during the second half and give it their all.

Although Pausch hadn’t seen CoachGraham since he was an adolescent, what CoachGraham had taught him he would remember for the rest of his life. Similar to football, one can be discouraged easily, but what makes legendsis the courage to not to give up and fight on. Football, to Pausch, was just a symbol of life. He never made it to the NFL, but the spirit of football will stay with him forever.

Reflection:

Life is a chain of challenges and obstacles. Most of us are weakin the face of life’s challenges, andonly few realize their full potential. Only through the test of the fire can a metal be solid. Were it not for pain of being brought down, never could a man become tough. As one is being crushed to the thorn of depression, the hope germinates from the deepest place of heart and forces us to live on. That’s how heroes aremade.

However, parents nowadays do not want their children to be exposed to any challenges. Ironically, the protection deprives them of the opportunity to become mature and tough. Flowers in the greenhouse are breath-taking on the outside, but delicate on the inside. Children under excessive protection can never adapt to the cruel reality.

One can be destroyed, but can never be defeated withenduring courage. Nevertheless, children are forbidden the chance of growing into a strong men and women. On top of that, they cannot taste the victory and enjoy the accomplishment of defeating obstacles. The value of life is thus never redeemed.

No pain, no gain. The procedure of growing is painful, but if it weren’t for the pain, one couldn’t be mature. Life is full of challenges and hindrances, but it is also a precious gift. How to lengthen the value of life is what we have to discover.

Article: The Last Lecture --- I Never Made It To The NFL

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

The author of the article learned so much from football even though he was dragged to join it by his father in the very beginning. In the article, he taught us what he had learned by telling many pieces of story about his childhood and football.

His coach, Graham, influenced his life a lot, and during the first practice, the coach taught them fundamentals, which are important but are always ignored. Second, the guy wanted to tell us that the ones punishing you because of your bad behavior still love you and care about you, and want to make you better. He realized it with the help of his assistant who explained to him why the coach pushed him hard.

Nowadays, we all wanted to give children self-esteem, and so did the coach. He knew there was really only one way to teach children to develop it: Just keep giving them something they can’t do and they work hard until they find they can do it. However, a coach like Graham can’t be accepted by parents today. He was too tough. However, the real problem parents don’t know is that they coddle their children too much. To the author’sregret, children are not learning to their full potential because people are being too soft with them.

Even though the author hasn’t seen the coach since he was a teen, he still remembers what the coach taught, forcing him to work harder whenever he feels like quitting, forcing him to be better. Needless to say, the coach was a master in indirect teaching.

Reflection:

Parents who have their children join organized sports always want the children to learn important things through it. However, they usually overprotect their children too much and thus their children can’t learn important things, such as teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship and an ability to deal with hardships. Maybe parents might think the way some coaches teach their children is too severe, but it can also help children learn something important. Learning to facedifficulty early on in life is better for children. They will face difficulties eventually, even though we help them avoid some now.

The article also reminds us of the importance of fundamental life lessons. We often think we can put something off as long as we can. As a result, we ignore that we should build solid fundamentals before we work. The neglect may lead to some misfortunes and even some tragedies later in life. Fundamentals are important not only in playing sports but also in doing everything else in our lives.

Punishment and insistence are symbols of love sometimes. When parents and teachers scold us, we may feel angry, desperate, and even bothered. However, if we remember thatthey are expressing love to us, it should help us feel better. No one will say anything to someone they don’t care about. In other words, when someone is pushing us too hard, we should remember that they just want to make us better and we should feel blessed instead of sad.

In the article, from the coach, we can extract some lessons and some viewpoints from the past, which are always important to remember. There are some obvious reasons to remember them. After reading this article, we understand some older people’s thinking. As a result, we can eliminate some misunderstandings between generations. After all, this is how some people express love – tough love.

Article: The Cellist of Sarajevo

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

There was a moving story behind the musical composition which Yo-Yo Ma played at the International Cello Festival in 1994. On May 27, 1992, in Sarajevo, a bakery distributed bread to the starving refugees in this war-shattered city. However, at 4 pm, a mortar shell killed everyone in the bakery and the street was destroyed. A distinguished cellist named Vedran Smailovic lived nearby andwitnessed the massacre. He couldn’t endure any more and was inspired to make music of this tragedy to promote anti-war thoughts. Smailovic played the cello punctually everyday for the next 22 daysall while shells were going off outside but he never got hurt. The composition The Cellist of Sarajevo was written by an English composer, David Wilde. After Yo-Yo MA finished his performance, he found Smailovic in the audience and gave Smailovic a big hug. In summary, music is a gift we all share and understand.

Reflection:

Wars always lead to a lot of tragedies and many terrible things. We can’t feel how horrible things can be unless these things happen to us. Smailovic witnessed the massacre and it was easy for him to foresee his own death during these hard times. However, he wasn’t afraid at all;he decided to devote the rest of his life to playing music for everyone who strived to survive at that time. If we were Smailovic, what would we do? Maybe we would escape from there just like others, or just wait for our own death without doing anything.

Music is a kind of art. We can feel what feelings the composer is trying to convey. We have to learn to listen to it and start to understand it. Music not only can help release our daily stress, but also help us cultivate our minds.

Article:Health Care and Epidemics

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

Everyone suffers from a disease at some point. However, millions of people around the world don't have good health care. Becauseof it,people get sick easily and often. Although people have all kinds of ideas about how to prevent and treat diseases,it is still very hard for us to do. We sometimes spend our time and money on vitamins and other useless treatments. People are afraid of many diseases. Because of their fear, they can be cruel to victims of diseases. Some of the victims were fired from their jobs and left inside their homes to die. People should take realistic action to prevent themselves from diseases, and they should take health care more seriously.

Reflection:

Diseases, viruses, and bacteria are everywhere and surround everyone. Everyone has suffered from some sort of sickness. Learning how to protect ourselves from catching a cold is very important. The best way to prevent sickness is to keep yourself clean. It sounds very easy;however, you will realize that everything around you is full of germs. Don’t panic! There are still certain things you can do to avoid germs. First, you should wash your hands often. Second, you should avoid physical contact with sick persons. And most of all, when you are sick, please keep your towel and other belongings separate from everyone else's. Try not to touch things that aren’t yours. Last but not least, explain to others why you are doing this,so that people won't misunderstand and get mad at you.Scientists will continue their researches to find out how to keep diseases away from human beings and animals alike. What we should do for now is try to better prevent epidemics instead of stopping them once they attack us.

Article: Languages and Language Diversity

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

A language is a system of sounds, gestures,or characters that are used to communicate with others, expressing their feelings and ideas. All languages have rulesfor forming words and for ordering those words into meaningful sentences. Word order is more important in English than it is in other languages. The sound system is very important in Chinese as well as in many languages spoken in West Africa.

There are several major language families in the world, such as Austronesian, which contains 500 languages, and alsoIndo-Europenand Sino-Tibetan. Some of the languages are spoken in many countries, like English or Chinese. Some aren’t, like Basque. Saving a less-spoken language is an important way to keep a culture from extinction.

Reflection:

Many of us have a common problem in studying foreignlanguages but we are forced by academiccurriculums to learn them. There are some tips for learning other languages, some of which are used in our classrooms. First, try to relax when we are learning. If we memorize things fast,it's possible to forget them fast, as well. Second, try to associate some things with the word or sentence, which will help you have a better understanding of the word or sentence. Third,in writing, don't be afraid of making mistakes, even during the test. Keep practicing, thinking and writing using complete sentences. Fourth, read articles or short stories. There are a lot of articles. Please don't say you're not interested in anyof them. Fifth, and the most important one is speaking. You don't need to find a foreigner to talk with. Just stand in front of the mirror! Spend five minutes each day while you are getting dressed or doing your hair. Talk to yourself as well as sing songs when you are taking a shower. Last but not least, rent some films and watch them with Chinese subtitles. Try to understand the meanings of the spoken words. With these tips, you may have different views and experiences of learning a new language.

Article: Health Care and Epidemics, Biological Clocks, Sleep and Dreams

指導老師: 詹斐懿

Summary:

There are 3 interesting articles I chose to read. The first one “Health Care and Epidemics” is mainly about the fact that millions of people around the world don’t have good health care. There are many reasons that keep people from having good health care. When tcondition for these reasons are present in largely populated countries, epidemics can start. Epidemics can even changethe course of history. For most people, epidemics are very horrible. What’s more, to prevent themselves from being infected, lots of people can be cruel to victims of the disease. According to researchers, healing is much more expensive than preventing. Therefore, we should focus more on preventing them than stopping them.

The second article I read is “Biological Clocks.” Human beings around the world have their own biological clocks. Both animals and plants are in rhythm with the natural divisions of time-day, night and even seasons. Factors such as sunshine, temperature and tides are all at play. Humans, like animals, have biological clocks as well. Many human activities take place roughly at the same time. For example, a large number of violent crimes and traffic accidents happen when there’s a full moon. Last, the author also tells us several ways to lessen jet lag which makes us feel tired and uncomfortable.

The third article is called “Sleep and Dreams.” Sleep is very important to humans and is a biological need. The thoughts in your mind will appear as dreams. Those who dream during a good night’s sleep are more likely to remember newly learned skills. Most people need from 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep a night. According to doctors, if we don’t relax ourselves or avoid bad habits, we will have trouble sleeping.

Reflection:

Health care is very important. However, even if we have enough money to take care of ourselves, most of us still fail to engage in good health practices. For instance, people should sleep at least 8 hours a day so that we can be full of energy, but most of us spend so much time on other things like playing games, studying and working that we don’t have enough time to have a good sleep.

We must take our biological clocks seriously. When it’s time to sleep, we must sleep. Likewise, when it’s time to work, we must work. Keeping our lives organized is our duty, or we will endanger our health, which will make us age faster. When we are exhausted, epidemics attack our bodies easier. Surely, we wouldn’t like to come down with any disease, particularly an epidemic disease. If we don’t want to be the outcasts, we should make sure that we take care of our health. After all, people can be cruel to whoever comes down with an epidemic. They fire victims from their jobs, steer clear of them on streets and refuse them transportation services. In ancient times, they even killed victims just because they didn’t want to allow the disease to be spread! There’s no ideal country in the world. Though I don’t want to admit that, it is the reality. Without sleep, we can’t do things well. Without an organized schedule in life, we might get sick more easily. Having a good night sleep and a normal biological clock is necessary and normal.Just as birds need wings, humans need sleep.

Summary

The article “Languages and Language Diversity” is about the fact that there are roughly 6000 languages in the world today. The major language families are intertwined and the languages in each family are related. A recent research indicates that a child’s brain actually learns a new language differently than an adult’s brain does. The last part is a warning that there are roughly 3000 languages which will be lost forever.

The article “Sleep and Dream” is about how human brain works during our sleep. Nowadays, doctors and scientists still haven’t fully understood our brain operations during sleep. Our body characteristics will change during sleep, such as brain waves, blood pressure and heartbeat. Scientists have learned that REM and NREM is alternating when we sleep. The stage REM is the time when we dream, and NREM is divided into three stages. Dreams can have positive effects on our lives. During a dream we concentrate on problems. Having a good sleep may even help our memory. The next part is about what people may do during sleep, such as sleepwalking, grinding teeth and snoring and also provide the reasons for them. The last paragraph of the article is about how long most people need to sleep, and the bad effects of taking sleeping pills and what you could do if you have trouble sleeping.
